We need Fiscal Responsibility, Not Greed

Thursday, March 4, 2010

To the Editor:

If the road to hell is paved with good intentions, the Bedford tax hikes are a perfect example. Everyone involved is convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that their cause is genuine and will benefit the recipients. They’re so close to the trees, they can no longer see the dire economic conditions of our country, states and towns. They conveniently forget the new LLC tax. They conveniently forget about the expiration of the Bush Administration tax cuts. They conveniently forget about Washington’s wild spending spree that will surely drive up the cost of goods and services for years to come. What ever happened to fiscal responsibility? What ever happened to caring for your fellow citizens in need? Instead, we hear “If you don’t like the taxes, you can move out,” which puts greed in front of compassion for the unemployed and the senior citizens who helped build this town. We should be minimizing the tax rate increases for anyone older than 60 and freezing taxes completely at 65. This is not a new concept by any means. The goal is to force some fiscal restraint on those who think we are a bottomless pit of money for their non-stop good intentions.
