Marijuana use law goes too far
Friday, March 12, 2010
To the Editor:
Marijuana should be used for people suffering from disease; however, it should not be used by the general population.
It is a psychoactive drug.
The use of marijuana by teens is a very dangerous activity. Students who smoke marijuana show cognitive impairment and troubles with learning.
Marijuana has cannabinoids and THC (tetrahydrocannibol) which affect memory and emotions of a person’s central nervous system. There are 400 chemicals of which 60 are cannabinoids in marijuana. These are psychoactive compounds. THC affects receptors in the brain and control memory, thought, concentration, time and coordinated movement. Various neurotransmitters are controlled by THC. Personality disturbance, depression and chronic anxiety can occur.
Marijuana impairs emotions and causes paranoia. I do not support this new law because I have seen the results of marijuana use with students in high school.
