Bedford’s Emily Burns is now a part of the action on “The Vineyard,” an unscripted reality series airing at 10 p.m., Tuesdays on ABC Family.
The show is set in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. The production highlights the romances, jealousies, lives and loves of a group of 11 locals and would-be islanders.
The island’s famous Black Dog Tavern shares in the summer memory making. The key players work there and all are confounded by decisions to be made about their lives. They live in a house on the island. Burns is, the story goes, sophisticated, opinionated and intent on finding a successful man to take care of her. Where better to find him than on Martha’s Vineyard in summer?
Burns grew up in Bedford. Her brother, Bob Burns, and her parents, Bill and Leslie Burns, encouraged her creativity. Graduation from West High School in 2006 preceded college at Keene State, where she earned a degree in 2010. Three years of living in Boston, working as a realtor at Boston Proper Real Estate and as a model for Click Models, put her in the right spot at the right time to undertake her new showbiz role.
Here, Burns shares some insights about her new adventure, a major role on “The Vineyard.” She recounts what it took to attain the role and describes some of the challenges and joys. Burns could be on her way to fame.
Q: Who do you play and what kind of a person is she?
A: I play myself. I’m very opinionated and set in my ways. I go to the Vineyard for a change of scenery and to meet new people.
Q: Is this a “soap opera” style show or a drama or a comedy?
A: It’s a reality TV show about people from different backgrounds, coming together for work and play during a summer on Martha’s Vineyard.
Q: What is the most satisfying aspect of this project?
A: Working for ABC Family, top producers, directors and film crew was an amazing experience. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to spend my summer with and I definitely made some lifelong friends with my fellow cast members. Also, getting to spend the summer on Martha’s Vineyard is nothing to complain about.
Q: What are some of the challenges?
A: I was really nervous about living in a house full of total strangers. Living and working with each other for two months created strong bonds, but also plenty of conflict between cast members.
Q: Is there any nudity in the show or is it truly for all the family?
A: It’s a family network, so we didn’t have any of that.
Q: Do you have an acting coach, or are you a “natural” who acts best in a spontaneous mode?
A: I’m a natural for sure.
Q: Is there room on the show for personal creativity in the unscripted format?
A: Like I said, the show is unscripted, but some of my best lines did get cut, maybe for the best.
Q: What do you find intriguing about the setting?
A: We lived in a house in Oak Bluffs, right on the beach, but we filmed all over the island. I think the show does a great job capturing how beautiful the island is.
Q: Do you have a website where fans can contact you?
A: Twitter@EmilyABurns and Facebook at facebook.com/EmilyBurnsFanPage.
