Centrix Bank gives $5k to improve Bedford signs
Friday, March 5, 2010
BEDFORD – The Centrix Bank Community Outreach program awarded the town a $5,000 grant to develop a new “Welcome to Bedford” signage program.
In 2009, the Bedford Economic Development Commission applied for the grant. In January, Centrix awarded the grant, and on Feb. 24, the Town Council approved the acceptance of the award.
Bedford currently has no “Welcome to Bedford” signs, but does have a Bedford sign at the intersection of Route 101 and Meetinghouse Road that is in need of repair.
Town Manager Russ Marcoux said the plan is to not only replace the current Route 101 and Meetinghouse Road sign but to add 12 more welcome signs. Medium-size signs would be at the Bedford lines on Route 114, Route 101 East and West, Wallace Road, Interstate 293, Route 3, New Boston Road and Bedford town office. While smaller signs would be placed at the lines on Donald Street, Liberty Hill Road, Boynton Street and Back River Road.
The Centrix Bank $5,000 grant will cover five of the 13 “Welcome to Bedford” signs, and according to Marcoux, several local businesses have already expressed interest in helping to cover expenses for the other eight.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity presented by Centrix,” Marcoux said. “It is a lofty goal, but one where I hope we can interest the business community to work with us.”
