Honor Society. Kevin Lee, of Bedford, a junior in finance, was recently inducted into Bryant University’s chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma honor society.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE. Keene State College’s 10th Annual Academic Excellence Conference took place March 270. This student professional conference is designed to showcase the academic work of Keene State students and the collaborative work between students and faculty. It allows students to share excellent work with a broad audience, and prepares them for submitting proposals to professional conferences.

Among the participants were the following local students:

FROM BEDFORD: Stephanie Brooker, presenting on “An Intellectual Coin Toss!”. and Dwight Churchill, presenting on “Coral Reef Monitoring on Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands.”

DEAN’S LIST. Justin Green and Mary Kitsis, of Bedford, were named to the fall 2009 dean’s list at the University of New Haven (Conn.).

BASIC TRAINING GRAD. Air Force Airman Patrick T. Lerman graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Thomas and Kelly Lerman, of Bedford, and is a 2009 graduate of Manchester High School West.

AWARD WINNER. The Hillsborough County Republican Committee named Hillsborough County Commissioner Carol H. Holden, of Amherst, as the 2010 Lincoln-Reagan Award winner. The award signifies Holden’s outstanding record of achievement and dedication to public service on behalf of the people of Hillsborough County. McCarthy wins Crystal Heart

CRYSTAL HEART AWARD. Bedford resident Sharron McCarthy, president and publisher of Manchester-based McLean Communications, received the American Heart Association’s Crystal Heart award at the organization’s fourth annual Go Red for Women Luncheon on Nov. 10. More than 500 people attended the event, which was held at The Radisson in Manchester.

McCarthy was cited for her service to a number of community organizations, including the American Heart Association. She served as chair of the 2007 Go Red Luncheon, doubling the event’s net revenue and attendance from the previous year. For the past two years, she has continued to serve as a volunteer on the executive leadership team for the luncheon.

Franne Ciriello, president of Eastlantic Advertising and chairman of this year’s luncheon, presented the award. She noted McCarthy’s willingness to share the story of her own struggle with heart disease in stories in the media and in speaking appearances.

Other organizations McCarthy has assisted include the Adult Learning Center, March of Dimes, Easter Seals, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the New Hampshire Food Bank. She serves as a board member for the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation.

MASTER OF BUSINESS. Frank Rizzo has been enrolled in a green master of business administration program at Antioch University New England. He earned his bachelor’s degree at SUNY at Stony Brook, N.Y.

NEW TREASURER. William Conrad has been appointed treasurer of the Board of Trustees of Child and Family Services of New Hampshire. Conrad has been a board member since 1994. He is a partner in Baldwin & Clarke Corporate Finance, Inc.

NEW INSTRUCTORS. Bedford Youth Performing Company has added new instructors in woodwinds and dance.

Joining the music faculty is saxophonist and woodwind instructor Nick Mainella. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, with a master’s from Western Michigan University, Mainella has performed and studied with musicians such as Clark Terry, James Moody, John Clayton, Branford Marsalis, Billy Pierce, Benny Greene and Jimmy Heath. At BYPC, Mainella is providing instruction on saxophone, clarinet and flute at all levels, as well as contributing in the ensemble program.

Award-winning dancer and choreographer Dee Keri has joined the dance faculty at BYPC, teaching a wide array of intermediate and advanced levels of ballet, jazz, tap, modern, lyrical and theater jazz. Keri has performed throughout New England in musicals such as “South Pacific,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Hello Dolly,” among others. She has also performed on cruise line stages and in the largest theme parks of America.

CERTIFICATION. Dr. Heidi McLaughlin, a chiropractor at Chiropractic Associates of Bedford, recently received certified chiropractic wellness practitioner credentials from the International Chiropractic Association after completing an exhaustive certification program.

McLaughlin is a 2004 graduate of Southern California University of Health Sciences/ Los Angeles College of Chiropractic in Whittier, Calif. She has been with Chiropractic Associates since 2004. She lives in Henniker with her husband, Troy, and daughter, Hayley.

REAL ESTATE DESIGNATIONS. Realtor Camille Redmond, of Coldwell-Banker Residential Brokerage in Bedford, and Heather McAfee, of The Bean Group in Bedford, were recently awarded their Graduate Realtor Institute designation after completing 96 hours of classroom instruction dealing with the residential real estate industry.

In earning the GRI designation, Redmond, a Bedford resident, and McAfee, a Bristol resident, were required to complete eight learning modules covering a range of subject matter, including contract law, professional standards, sales and marketing, finance and risk reduction. In addition, they have learned the fundamentals of brokerage and other areas of real estate specialization.

TOP ACHIEVER. Gary F. Wallace, an independent LPL Financial and Northeast Planning Associates, Inc. financial adviser, was named to the LPL Financial Director’s Club. This prestigious status is based on a production ranking of all registered advisors at LPL Financial at year-end 2008 and is reserved for select top achievers out of the 11,887 LPL financial advisers that LPL Financial supports.

NEW VP. Michael Caouette, of Northeast Planning Associates Inc., was recently installed as vice president of the Greater Manchester/Nashua Board of Realtors for 2010, Northeast Planning Associates Inc. provides conflict-free financial planning services, investment advice and asset management services to clients in the New England Area.

CHARITABLE SCOUT. Junior Girl Scout Casey Carter, of Bedford, collected more than 2,382 articles of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, towels, blankets, backpacks and shoes from family, friends and neighbors over her February vacation while working on her Girl Scout Bronze Award. She volunteered alongside members of the Haitian Community Center in Hollis, loading 55-gallon barrels with food, clothing and shoes. She sorted, labeled and bagged donated items. The container was full when it left for Haiti on March 3.

AWARD-WINNING POET.Kenna Marquis, 13, of Bedford, was honored during an award banquet on Saturday night, May 1, at the Radisson Hotel in Nashua by the New Hampshire Knights of Columbus for her winning poem, “Through the Eyes of an Angel.” She was presented with a check for $100 during the ceremony. Her poem was originally submitted to the national Right To Life contest, and ultimately ended up winning the New Hampshire State contest.

This is the second honor the eighth-grade Lurgio Middle School poet has received this spring. Earlier this year, the Poetry Society of New Hampshire recognized Kenna as a winner in their 2010 Junior Student Poetry Contest for her poem, “The Pebble.” That poem will be published in an upcoming edition of “The Poet’s Touchstone,” a publication of the Poetry Society of New Hampshire.

COURT OF HONOR. On Jan. 31, Troop 414 held an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Scott J. Mailloux. The ceremony was held at St. Elizabeth Seton Church and was attended by about 75 family, friends and Scouts.

James Mastricola Upper Elementary School needed voting booths and a ballot box to carry out a program to help teach students about voting. Mailloux drew up plans and met with Marsha McGill, school principal. The plans were accepted for voting booths and a ballot box that can be used for many years. With the acceptance of the school, Scott went before the Eagle Board and gained its approval for the project. He raised the needed funds by hosting a Dump Day at the Bedford town dump. Mailloux was honored at a JMUES assembly and received a certificate of appreciation from McGill and Assistant Principal William Morris.

NEW BROKER. Pierre Elie has joined NAI Norwood Group as business broker for the New Hampshire and North Shore area. He has more than 17 years of experience in business brokerage, management, wholesale and distribution.

Elie attended Concordia University in Montreal where he studied business administration and the University of Toronto where he specialized in marketing strategies. He is a member of the New England Business Brokers Association, a member of the National Association of Realtors and a member of the New Hampshire Commercial Investment Board of Realtors. He is a licensed real estate broker in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
