Help R.O.S.S. Club’s community service efforts by recycling
Friday, July 30, 2010
The R.O.S.S. Club was new to Ross A. Lurgio Middle School in the 2009-10 school year. R.O.S.S. stands for Respect Others School and Self. The mission of the club is to promote kindness and community service – to further carry on the legacy of Mr. Ross A. Lurgio, the assistant superintendent for whom our school is named. Lurgio was “all about helping people.” The club’s activities highlight and prove the fact that each student in the school can make a difference.
Through the club’s activities this year, it made a positivedifference for individuals, the school, community and world.
The club held many fundraisers over the year. In addition to the penny drive the group had a holiday bake sale. Baked goods were sold to teachers and the money was given to RAL families so they could have a better holiday. The club also made a get-well card that was signed by students and sent to a staff member. They also assisted with the preparation ofthe Media Center for the NWEA testing. And the club promoted the Recycled Book Drive by making posters, placing boxes in every homeroom and making announcements. More recently, club members brainstormed suggestions that would make the beginning of the school year more welcoming, especially for the new seveth-graders.
Club activities also moved the group outside. They weeded, planted flowers and more than 200 bulbs in front of the school.
In the fall, they decorated the front of the school with corn stalks, pumpkins and mums.
While this school year is officially over and summer is here, it is not too late for the community to recycle your used electronics with the R.O.S.S. Club! Over the summer, bring in your used cell phones, GPS devices, iPods, ink-jet cartridges, laser cartridges, video games and consoles, digitalcameras, laptops, PDA’s and DVD’s. A drop box is located in Ross A. Lurgio Middle School’s main office. By recycling your used technology, the club can earn cash to buy new technology for the school, as well as help the environment. Club members thanks the community in advance for your help.
