Chase away the Dog Days of summer at the 4th annual My Dogs are Barking 5k in Manchester

MANCHESTER – If you’re looking for a way to get some exercise with your four-legged friend this fall, you could head to the fourth annual My Dogs are Barking 5k on Saturday, Sept. 21, at Derryfield Park on Bridge Street in Manchester.
The My Dogs are Barking 5k raises money for homeless animals. Proceeds from the 3.1-mile race benefit the Annual Rescue League of New Hampshire, which has been helping find forever homes for animals since 1902.
The race starts at 9 a.m. just west of the Bridge Street park entrance. The course follows a loop around the circumference of the park and through surrounding neighborhoods. There will be one water stop on the course for racers, as well as a cooling pool for all the pooches putting in the miles.
If a beautiful, relatively flat course isn’t enough to get you to register, the post-race feast might be. Reward yourself for your hard work after the 5k race with Stonyfield Farms yogurt, chili from T-Bones restaurant, fresh fruit, bagels, delicious muffins and refreshments. And what’s a 5k race these days without adult refreshments? New this year, racers age 21 and older will receive a free beer ticket good for a drink either Friday evening at early packet pick-up or after the event at the Derryfield Restaurant on nearby Mammoth Road.
The top three male and female finishers will receive handmade ceramic bowls by local artist Paul Schill. Age group winners and the first “six-legged” runner and dog team will receive commemorative awards. The first 500 pre-registered runners for the 5k will receive a one-of-a-kind, commemorative race T-shirt designed by artist Keith Martin. Top fundraising teams will also be rewarded.
“This is one of the shelter’s major fundraisers and we rely on this race to help offset the cost for the care of the animals,” said Karen Moynihan, director of major events at the Animal Rescue League of NH. Last year, the organization raised nearly $17,000 from the 5k and $30,000 from the Pet Step Pet Walk, which takes place after the 5k at 11 a.m.
New this year, the Pet Step Pet Walk and My Dogs Are Barking 5k are part of the ARLNH Pet Fair, featuring exhibitors, food vendors, demonstrations from Manchester K9 Unit dogs, and activities for the family, such as face painting and arts and crafts. The Pet Fair starts at 9 a.m. with the 5k followed by the 2k Pet Walk at 11 a.m. The Pet Fair continues in the park until 3 p.m. All events take place rain or shine.
Register online at http://mydogsarebarking.com. Prerace registration is $25 for participants age 13 and older; $20 for kids 9-12 years; children 8 and younger are free. Day-of registration is $30, if available. The race field is limited to 1,000 runners.
Packet pickup is available from 5-7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20, at the Derryfield Country Club on Mammoth Road, Manchester.
Race-day packet pickup is at Derryfield Park starting at 7:30 a.m. For more information on the Animal Rescue League of NH, visit www.rescueleague.org.
