Staff Hunters in Bedford celebrates 10 years

It all started in fall 2003 with Tony Manfredi, a desk and a phone. Since then, Staff Hunters has grown to include 13 employees and two offices in Portsmouth and Bedford.
Here’s a look at our interview with Staff Hunters founder, Tony Manfredi:
Q: How did you get started in staffing?
A: I’ve spent my career as a staffing specialist. Before founding Staff Hunters, I worked for the world’s largest specialized staffing firm for 23 years. I held various positions, including branch, area and regional manager.
Q: What do you like about your work?
A: I enjoy collaborating with companies to provide staffing solutions. On the candidate side, it’s a great feeling when someone thanks you for believing in them and helping out with their career progression. It’s also very rewarding when we can place someone in a position on a temporary basis because they just need to work to pay their bills.
Q: To what do you attribute the success of Staff Hunters?
A: It’s a very competitive field. For me, it’s always been about relationships and that’s how we go about it. To us, it’s not just about sales; it’s really about getting to know our client companies and our candidates. Our process is to screen, interview and place based upon a thorough understanding of what both parties are looking for. Companies do business with people they can trust and we work very hard to earn that trust.
Q: What do you mean by competitive?
A: Let’s face it, there are a lot of staffing agencies. One thing that sets us apart is that our team has stayed with us for years. Ironically, it’s not uncommon to see high turnover with the staff at staffing agencies. Many people don’t make it past the first year. That’s because it’s tough. There are a lot of agencies competing for a few positions. Something that distinguishes us is that we work collectively as a team and we’re all really good listeners, which is key to making the right connections for our clients.
Q: What made you decide to go out on your own?
A: I had really learned the ropes. I saw what worked and what didn’t and had some very clear ideas about how I wanted to do things. Starting my own firm has allowed me to create the kind of processes and company that I envisioned. So far, it’s worked pretty well. Lots of agencies turn candidates away, but we do our best to help people. Being out of work is not easy and sometimes people need some advice about how to improve their resume or their interview techniques. We try to help because you never know when someone is the perfect fit for a particular position.
Q: What kinds of changes have you seen in your long career with staffing?
A: I think the biggest thing right now is seniors. These are skilled individuals who want to work and are very responsible and grateful in their jobs. It’s a burgeoning market that deserves attention.
Q: Why did you open a second office in Bedford?
A: We were getting a lot of business in that area. And, because our practice is to always interview candidates in person, it was a natural move to open in that market to make it more convenient for people. So, in 2007, we opened up in Bedford. It’s proven to be a good move.
Q: Does your firm have a specialty?
A: The firm as a whole does not have a particular specialty. But, members of our team do specialize in the areas of accounting, finance, engineering, human resources and administrative services.
Q: What’s your advice to a company looking for staffing?
A: Don’t try to do it yourself. It’s like our tagline says, ‘Great companies start with the right staff.’ There’s nothing more important to the growth of your business than having the right people. Working with a company like Staff Hunters helps you find those people with very little imposition. We find, these days more than ever, that one thing people are very short on is time. We manage the entire process and have a lot of very satisfied customers.
Q: How does it feel to reach the 10-year mark?
A: It feels fantastic. I have an outstanding team, we’re helping people all day long … I’m really proud.
