Bedford parents honored by governor

Friday, April 11, 2014

CONCORD – David and Christine Phillips, of Bedford, received the Unsung Hero Award from Gov. Maggie Hassan in February.

In honor of February as Parent Recognition Month, Hassan and the New Hampshire Children’s Trust honored 28 parents from every county in New Hampshire at the seventh annual Unsung Hero Awards, held Feb. 10 at the New Hampshire Statehouse in Concord.

Each honoree was nominated by a member of their community who considered the parents’ strength, courage and empathy that of a role model for all New Hampshire parents.

The Phillipses were nominated for this award by Rebecca Marden.

The Phillipses experienced an unexpected loss of their daughter to a disease knows as pulmonary veno occlusive disease (PVOD). In the wake of a devastating loss, they used the experience to dedicate their hearts, time and passion to help other families with this difficult adjustment.

They found a website called Bella Online – the Voice of Women, and Christine Phillips eventually took over the role of child loss editor for the site.

They also established the Friends of Aine Foundation to raise funds and build centers of support for family members, including young siblings, that have lost someone too soon. By taking these steps, David and Christine Phillips have found a way to turn grief into something positive.

Upon receiving the framed award from the governor, the parents and their families were each photographed with Hassan. After the ceremony, parents and their families were welcomed to a reception.
