This is going to sound a little weird, but, wow, that is some good-looking dog. We’re talking, of course, about Fin, a flat-coated retriever owned by Dan and Maureen McIntyre and recently named Bedford’s 2012 Poster Dog.

Dog owners will be seeing a lot of Fin in the coming months, as his picture will be featured on the town’s 2012 dog licensing campaign materials, which include posters, postcards and a slide on BCTV.

A dog is a dog is a dog – thank you, Gertrude Stein – but some dogs are just … Wow, that’s a good-looking dog.

We do not usually get so … what’s the proper word here? ... interested, perhaps, in how a dog looks. It looks, of course, like a dog in that it has four legs, a tail, ears, a coat, etc., but if you checked out the picture of Fin in last week’s Journal, or on our Web site (www.cabinet.com) then you might think, as do we … wow, that’s a good-looking dog.

Some of us, thinking thus, might decide to annoy our cats by showing them the picture of Fin.

“Here, kitty, kitty. Oh, kitty? You will never look this good. Go ahead, wash. You could wash yourself for a month and you will never look this good. Don’t you dare hiss at me.”

A bit cruel, but what can one do? Lie to the cat?

“Nah, that dog has nothing on you.”

Except … wow, that is a good-looking dog.

This was a neat contest, we think, one that gets the public involved in a town duty, something required of all dog owners, and makes a mundane activity a bit more interesting and fun. And why not have fun if you can? If we could do something like this when we have to renew our drivers’ licenses … No, not a dog photo, no, but … Well, we’ll leave that up to the state.
