Bedford knocks off Portsmouth
Friday, November 4, 2011
The Bedford High School football team won its sixth game in a row, beating Portsmouth 24-12 on the road Friday night.
The win leaves the Bulldogs (6-1 in Division III) in a three-way tie with Goffstown and Hollis/Brookline at the top of the division standings.
Bedford got a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Dylan York, who also had one of the Bulldogs’ three interceptions of Portsmouth quarterback Bill Hartmann. Nick Vailas also hit Brian Collins for a 66-yard touchdown pass and David Cannone scored on a 1-yard run.
The Bulldogs will host Souhegan (4-3) Friday at 7 p.m. A win would guarantee Bedford of a home playoff game, while a win and a Goffstown loss would give Bedford the No. 1 seed in the division.
Girls take third
The Bedford girls cross country team finished third at the Division II championship meet, held at Derryfield Park in Manchester, while the boys came in sixth.
Hannah Zeltner led the girls, finishing third in 18:58, while Gwenyth Winship came in sixth in 19:31. Kris Larosa (20:33) was 24th overall.
Tristam Winship was the top boys finisher, taking 11th in 16:57. Sam Daly came in 21st in 17:13.
Both teams will participate in the Meet of Champions on Saturday at Nashua South.
