FOOTBALL
Bedford Jaguars
The Bedford Jaguars seventh-grade team conquered the Salem Rams to win the State Championship 19-12. Salem opened the game by driving down the field on its first possession for a 6-0 lead. Paxton Smith blocked the extra point kick, which would prove very important as the game wore on. The Jags first possession ended in a punt, but the defense found its rhythm and forced a return punt by Salem. From there, it was a smashmouth football game. The Jags were able to drive down the field and score on a 3-yard TD run by Nick Cannone. Paxton Smith converted the extra point run for 7-6 lead.
That lead was short lived as the Salem took the kickoff for a TD. Yet the Jags stood tall on the extra point and the game was 12-7 in favor of the Rams. The Jags got a huge punt from Austin D’Anjou and the defense held again.
With 1:32 left in the first half, the Jags offense went to work at the Salem 40-yard line. Brendan Dillon threw a perfect strike to Austin D’Anjou for a TD with less than two seconds left in the half. The extra point was not successful so the Jags lead was just one point 13-12.
The second half was filled with nothing but defense. The Salem Rams could not move the ball in the second half with huge stops by Shahrukh Hussain, Alex Kurowski, Nick Leahy, Colby Smith, Austin D’Anjou, Jeff Curran, Nolan Lenane, Nick Cannone, Nate Moody, Jake Gregson, Paxton Smith and Thomas Parker. Hard running by Nick Cannone, Paxton Smith, Jake Gregson, Shahrukh Hussain, Nick Leahy, Colby Smith and Austin D’Anjou provided enough yards to win the field position game.
With 18 seconds left and Salem at midfield, the Rams attempted a fade pass which Austin D’Anjou intercepted and took back downfield for a final 19-12 victory. The Jaguars will take their undefeated season to the AYF New England Region semifinal to be held in New Hampshire this weekend.
Bedford Junior Bulldogs
The Bedford Junior Bulldog varsity team finished its regular season undefeated with a 44-6 victory over the Exeter Seahawks. Sai kou Bah, Conner Kelley and Griffin Lyons led the Jr. Bulldogs scoring machine with touchdown runs all through the afternoon. The stingy Jr. Bulldog defense gave up zero points throughout the whole game and was led by great defensive line work by Will Fargo, Will Lyons, Ben Beals, Sean Kenny and Ben Miller. Defensive backers Matt Beals, Sam Bennett, Tyler Allen and Tommy LeMay kept the defense solid throughout the day. The Jr. Bulldogs advance to the semifinals and will face Lowell in a tough matchup.
The Jr. Bulldog JV Team finished the regular season at 6-1 with an impressive 24-0 victory over the Exeter Seahawks. Mikael Brown, Khorrie Zamor and Ethan Lavallee provided solid runs for the offense. Josh Koellmer, Josh Bethune, Colin Hoak, Hans Andreasen and Zach Nover were standouts on the defensive shutout.
