A double-digit halftime lead usually leads to a win, and it did Monday night for the Bedford High School boys basketball team, but Goffstown certainly made the Bulldogs work for it.

Bedford led by 11 points at the break, but the Grizzlies used a 13-3 run to make it one-point game and even took the lead early in the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs closed out a 78-71 win in their home opener.

Trevor Fahmy scored 23 points for Bedford (1-1) while Trevor Glassman added 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and Cameron Meservey chipped in with 12 points. Goffstown (1-1) got a game-high 28 points from Jacob Mount, but Steven Edwards was the only other player in double figures, scoring 10. As a team, the Grizzlies hit nine 3s, but according to coach Justin Gorham, they needed more.

“We didn’t play as fast or as urgent as we normally do,” Gorham said. “That’s how we’re supposed to play the entire time and we didn’t. We played their tempo. They dictated how we played and we can’t. Man for man, we can’t play that way.”

Bedford was up 41-30 at the start of the third quarter, but Goffstown opened the quarter with a 9-0 run that included two 3s by Mount to make it a two-point game just 2:23 into the half. The Bulldogs were able to hold on to the lead, but were up just one, 54-53, going into the fourth.

“We just had to keep playing hard,” Bedford coach John Langlois said. “In a game like that, you’re going to get swings that will go pretty quickly and pretty easily because the game is so fast. They have some good 3-point shooters and if you hit three 3s, suddenly the game could have been 12 and now its a three-point game.”

A 3 by Timoyhy Riehl put Goffstown up 56-54 seven seconds into the fourth quarter. Bedford took a timeout and turned things around, going on a 14-3 to take a 68-59 lead with 4:05 left in the game.

Goffstown got within four points, 71-67, with 2:14 to play, but Bedford was able to hang on down the stretch.
