Quite a run
Friday, January 6, 2012
Next winter the Bedford High School girls basketball team will compete in Division I. Last week the Bulldogs got a good taste of the division at the Nashua North Holiday Tournament.
The Bulldogs beat both Nashua North and Nashua South on the way to the tournaments finals, where they dropped a 37-33 decision to Division II rival Windham.
It was a successful, if costly, week for Bedford, who lost starting center McKenzie Brown to an ankle injury in a 64-33 victory over Pelham in pool play.
The 3-1 Bulldogs (6-1 overall), will resume divisional play Tuesday with a tough road game at unbeaten (4-0) Hollis Brookline and will likely do it without Brown.
“This was a great tournament with a lot of great competition,’’ Bedford coach Sue Thomas said after the final. “Tonight we had to adjust to not having McKenzie.
“We had three big people now we have two. We had a three person rotation in the post, tonight Haley (Driscoll) and Rachel (Allen) had to play most of the game.’’
Driscoll had 10 points to lead Bedford in the finals. Maggie McGown, who finished with eight points, gave the Bulldogs a 33-32 lead with a layup with two minutes and 45 seconds left, but it would be Bedford’s final points of the game.
Rachel Collins, who had nine points in the final, exploded for 25 in Bedford’s victory over Pelham. Brown and Driscoll had 10 points each in a 42-35 victory over Nashua North and Collins led the way with 14 points in a 44-33 victory over Nashua South in Bedford’s tournament opener.
Overall, a very successful week, but Bedford has a tough stretch of its schedule coming up with one of its best players on the sidelines.
