Where credit is due
Wednesday, December 23, 2009
Last week’s editorial praised Milford School Board member Len Mannino for making a motion to look at what cuts could be made to co-curricular activities to lower the 2010-11 school budget proposal before deciding on the superintendent’s proposed cuts.
What the editorial didn’t point out – and what we want to rectify today – is the School Board member Bob Willette was the one who first raised the issue at the Dec. 7 meeting and got the discussion going.
More unsung heroes
The photos we ran last week on page one of a Christmas party held at the VFW for the families of members of the local National Guard unit soon to be deployed to Afghanistan featured close-ups of some participants in the event. One of those participants called us last week, seemingly more out of embarrassment than anything else, to point out that there were dozens of volunteers from the local Lions Club, VFW and American Legion who were involved in the event and are more deserving of recognition for their efforts.
In a world where some people are more concerned with self-promotion than selflessness, our conversation with this individual reminded us of all the good work members of organizations such as these do – much of it behind the scenes – for the betterment of the community.
We don’t have another photo from the event that shows these unsung heroes at work, but we just wanted to use this space to acknowledge their efforts.
