Dwight Brew stands above the crowd
Wednesday, March 3, 2010
To the Editor:
Of the candidates running for Amherst selectman this year, I know three of them and respect and admire all three, but the candidate that I know best and consider to be exceptional is Dwight Brew.
I have worked closely with Dwight for the past five years on the Amherst School Board which, before Dwight joined the board, was suffering from a lack of public trust. Dwight was a prime mover in re-establishing that trust. He has led the board in establishing sound financial policies, setting high educational goals, being responsive to public opinion, dealing fairly with people, keeping procedures and financial dealings transparent, and being sensitive to the financial burden carried by the taxpayer. He has established high standards for us to live up to.
Dwight has the respect of his fellow board members for the thoughtful way he handles problems, his willingness to listen to the other side of an argument, his independent thinking and questioning, and his dogged determination to do what is in the best interests of the town and the voters.
As a selectman he can offer both depth of knowledge and the enthusiasm of a new board member. His grasp of municipal budgets and financial planning from his years on the Town Ways and Means and the Amherst School Board would be assets that any town board could benefit from. I hope that people will vote for Dwight. He has been a great school board member and will be a great selectman.
