MILFORD – St. Joseph Hospital officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Friday, Aug. 1 for a new Milford Medical Center building.

The multi-level, 19,500-square-foot outpatient facility on Nashua Street is scheduled to open in the summer of 2015,

Construction will be divided up into three phases, and all services currently offered at Milford Medical Center will remain fully operational during the building process.

New features will include an urgent care center with six private exam/treatment rooms, private patient registration areas, a large rehabilitation gym with modern fitness equipment, a 400 square foot community room, an enclosed walkway for access to the new building and the existing medical office building and a patient drop-off area at the front entrance.

The new outpatient ambulatory building will include a full range of diagnostic imaging capabilities including general radiology, ultrasound, mammography – including 3D mammography, and, in the near future, bone density screenings.

St. Joseph Hospital opened Milford Medical Center in 1977 using the 1920s-era building that has been expanded over the years. It will be demolished after the new building is in use.

After the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr. Rich Boehler, president and CEO of St. Joseph Hospital, said the new building will provide the Milford area with the “same services in a better facility.”

The medical center’s emergency room switched to an urgent care facility in December of 2013, offering non-emergency diagnosis and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries. Hospital officials said that between 2008 and 2013 the number of visits to the ER had decreased by 43 percent as patients sought lower cost options.

Boehler said that patient use has increased by 60 to 75 percent since the switch to urgent care. For more information about Milford Medical Center Urgent Care, visit www.stjosephhospital.com.
