Hatch competes for youth of year
Jessica Hatch, of Milford, recently competed against six other Youth of the Year winners from across New Hampshire for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of New Hampshire Youth of the Year.
During this intensive competition, held May 19 in Concord, Hatch met with Sen. Peter Bragdon and participated in lengthy interviews with an esteemed panel of judges.
“Although Jessica did not win at the state level, the staff and Board of Directors are all very proud of her.” stated Susan Taylor, executive director at the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley. “She personified how the Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley Club helps kids be great today and developing into caring, responsible citizens tomorrow.”
The Boys & Girls Club of Souhegan Valley was well represented during the Youth of the Year awards dinner with performances by members Annie Reilly, Lucas Nevrla and Emma Mariany.
White receives scholarship
Austin White recently received a $2,000 scholarship from the New Hampshire Good Roads Association. He will be attending Vermont Technical College as a freshman in the fall and will pursue a degree in construction management.
Scouts visit Battleship Cove
Pack 4, of Milford, recently made a trip to Battleship Cove, in Fall River, Mass., to explore the world’s largest collection of historic naval ships. After touring the battleship Massachusetts, destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., submarine Lionfish, PT Boats 617 and 796, and the Russian missile corvette Hiddensee, the scouts, their parents and adult leaders spent the night of June 14 on board the famous USS Massachusetts.
Battleship Cove’s Nautical Nights program included a storyteller, a movie and a Morse Code workshop. The boys were also treated to a presentation by a surviving sailor who served on the USS Massachusetts from 1942-47. The trip has enabled the scouts to better understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by veterans of all military branches in all wars.
Noorda named Trig-Star for ’10
Kaelee Noorda, a sophomore at Souhegan High School, was named New Hampshire Trig-Star for 2010 at the New Hampshire Land Surveyors Association’s 20th annual statewide Trig-Star competition held in Concord. Kaelee is the daughter of Candee and Eric Noorda, of Mont Vernon.
Project SEARCH certificates
On Monday, June 21, 10 students were recognized for successful completion and participation in St. Joseph Hospital Project SEARCH, a school-to-work program for high school students with developmental disabilities. The program is a collaborative effort between St. Joseph Hospital, LinkAbilities, the Nashua School District (and surrounding school districts), New Hampshire Vocational Rehabilitation, The PLUS Company, Inc. and Gateways Community Services.
The 2010 Project SEARCH class included: Trever Bowley, of Nashua; Timothy Cleaveland; of Amherst; Timothy Heskett; of Nashua; Anna Kelley; of Brookline; Kathryn Mayo, of Merrimack; Maria Mena, of Nashua; Marquis Messina, of Nashua; Trevor Murphy, of Nashua; Lindsay Ogden, of Brookline, and Eric Tiernan, of Litchfield.
St. Joseph Hospital Project SEARCH provides total workplace immersion for high school students with developmental disabilities who will soon tranisiton to the community. The program facilitates a combination of classroom instruction, career exploration and on-the-job training and support.
Success Grants awarded
The following area residents were awarded Success Grants by University of New Hampshire Manchester. Success Grants are awarded to incoming freshmen who graduated in the top 15 percent of their high school class. The grant is renewable for up to four years. Awarded grants were: Christopher Rochon, an Alvirne High School, Hudson graduate who will study biological sciences; Forest Walen, a Souhegan High School, Amherst graduate who will study psychology; and Ramon Whitman, a Nashua High School North graduate who will study computer information systems.
Amherst Orthodontics scholarships
Amherst Orthodontics is proud to announce the recipients of the 2010 Amherst Orthodontic Scientific Scholarship.
Applications were accepted from graduates ranking in the top 10 percent of their class who are pursuing a college education in the healthcare profession. The winners were Leigh Kowalski, of Hollis/Brookline High School, who will be attending the Univ. of Virginia; Katie Clemensf of Milford High School, who will attend University of New Hampshire; Katie McClain, of Bedford High School, who will attend University of Connecticut, and Monica Gandhi, ofm Souhegan High School, who will attend University of Massachusetts.
Kohl’s Kids Who Care
Garrett Bianchi, 18, of Milford, and Matthew Prothero, 11, of Bedford, were recently recognized by the Kohl’s Kids Who Care Scholarship Program for making a difference in their communities through volunteering. They received a $50 Kohl’s gift card and qualify for a chance to receive a $1,000 college scholarship to be awarded in July.
BG students earn scholarships
Kristyn A. Sirois, a student at Bishop Guertin High School, and Heidi Springman, a student at Souhegan High School, were recently awarded college scholarships by the Mortgage Bankers and Brokers Association of New Hampshire. Visit www.mbba-nh.org.
