David B. Tierney

WILTON – David B. Tierney, 78, died Jan. 22, 2010, at St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua.
He was born in Amherst on May 30, 1931, a son of the late David B. Tierney Sr. and Marion (Lovejoy) Dow Tierney.
Mr. Tierney attended schools in Canaan and graduated from Milford High School, class of 1949. He earned his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education from Keene State College.
A resident of Wilton for the past 47 years, he and his wife wintered in Daytona Shores, Fla., for many years.
Beginning in 1963, Mr. Tierney taught sixth grade at the Jacques and Bales schools in Milford, became assistant principal and then principal of the Milford elementary schools before retiring in 1987.
Mr. Tierney enjoyed woodworking, golfing and a variety of sports. As his children were growing up, he was involved in Little League Baseball. In addition, he was active in his community as a member of the Budget Committee, Water Commission and the Board of Adjustment.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served during the Korean conflict.
Mr. Tierney was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Eugene Dow and Richard Dow; and two sisters, Dorothy Chase and Jane Kalmbaugh.
Family members include his wife of 53 years, Joan (McLeod) Tierney of Wilton,; a daughter, Tracey Tierney of Milford; two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Ann Tierney of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Christopher and Pamela Tierney of Merrimack; three grandchildren, Erin, Jordan and Autumn; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours were Monday, Jan. 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Smith & Heald Funeral Home, 63 Elm St., Milford. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Second Congregational Church of Wilton, corner of Dale and Gregg streets, Wilton. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Wilton in the spring.
