The Blue Bus rolls into Wilton

Thursday, April 3, 2014

WILTON – On March 17, the Souhegan Valley Rides “Blue Bus” made its inaugural trip to assist Wilton resident Deborah Daniels, who needed a ride to an appointment in Nashua.

Daniels usually calls FISH for help with rides to health care appointments. Daniels decided to try the Blue Bus after learning that FISH is in need of more volunteer drivers to meet the demand for ride requests they receive for appointments outside of the Nashua and Souhegan Valley area. As she noted after taking her first Blue Bus ride, “It went very smoothly. This is a great program to have and I will definitely be using the Blue Bus again.”

Serving the towns of Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Milford, Mont Vernon and Wilton, Souhegan Valley Rides has grown steadily since the first ride was provided nearly six years ago. As of the end of February, 13,671 rides have been provided to area residents. Incidentally, in February a Milford passenger took that community’s 10,000th ride.

Currently, the bus service is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., including travel time to and from the garage in Nashua. The buses, drivers and call center operations are subcontracted from the Nashua Transit System. The focus for this service is on providing transportation to nonemergency health care appointments and assisting those in greatest need – elderly residents, those living with a disability, and residents who are unable to drive. Other residents may use the service as space is available. Rides also are available locally and to Nashua for access to social service appointments, senior activity centers, local town facilities and libraries, and shopping.
