Pastry shop to host school clothing drive
Thursday, August 7, 2014
AMHERST – Frederick’s Pastries is hosting a clothing drive during the month of August to collect gently used or new clothes and basic necessities for Catie’s Closet.
Catie’s Closet was founded in 2010 in Lowell, Massachusetts to provide clothing to students at Lowell High School who were in need. There are currently three schools in Hudson, two schools in Nashua and 17 in Lowell, Mass., with Catie’s Closet available to clothe students who are homeless and in need.
Frederick’s Pastries and Catie’s Closet are partnering together to collect clothes and toiletries for the upcoming school year. All three Frederick’s Pastries locations will have a clothing donation box inside the store.
New socks, new underwear, new sneakers, new or gently used shirts and long sleeve T-shirts, jeans, pants, shorts, capris, jackets, hoodies and sweatpants are needed in boys, girls and teen sizes Gently used items should be clean, free from stains and not damaged.
Toiletries needed in full size bottles are deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, body wash, feminine products and shaving supplies.
“When I learned about Catie’s Closet, I couldn’t believe the number of children and teenagers in need that were in schools in surrounding towns” said Susan Lozier Robert, proprietor of Frederick’s Pastries. “I immediately felt like I needed to do something. Catie’s Closet is such a wonderful program that creates closets full of clean clothes and toiletries in the schools where students who are homeless or below the poverty level can come in and have clothes that fit, feel good and are today’s style.”
Catie’s Closet was named after Catie Bisson who graduated from Lowell High School in 2010, but passed away of a rare connective tissue disorder. This non-profit has more than 20 closets in local schools, and is opening more to provide homeless students free clothing and toiletries.
Mickey Cockrell, Catie’s aunt and executive director of Catie’s Closet said, “Catie’s Closet is honored to collaborate with Frederick’s Pastries for this incredible clothing drive. It is because of relationships with valuable community partners like Frederick’s that we are able to support so many students in need. A helping hand and an open door can be life changing and we are so happy that together we will be partners in hope.”
Frederick’s thought the month of August would be a great time to host a back to school clothing drive.
“If you are going back to school shopping we are hoping that people will sift through their closets for clothes that don’t fit anymore, or have never been worn and drop them off to the clothing drop boxes in our stores. The more clothing (and toiletries) that are donated the more local students will end up benefiting and focusing on their educations,” Lozier Robert said.
Clothing bins will be in all three Frederick’s Pastries locations and at Frank FM’s office at 120 Industrial Park Drive in Nashua.
