Playing Fields in Amherst …
Friday, January 25, 2013
We purchased the property known as Brewster Fields (former soccer complex) 2 years ago. We have finished all improvements to the property, to allow for 8 full size playing fields. Our recent application for the variances needed to allow for commercial play has been denied by the Amherst ZBA (our proposal included having weddings to help offset the capitol and maintenance costs. (private funding with no impact to tax base!)). The reason given was that it was too heavy a use for the property, and that the kids playing sports would affect the Aquifer, Flood plain, and Watershed Protection District ?? We loose Cemetery fields as of Sept. 2014. As a 50 yr resident of Amherst, it was my goal to help resolve the playing field crisis. We had 3 people speak in favor and lots of abutters speak against ( at the ZBA meeting). The resale value of your home in Amherst will be affected negatively, because some teams will be forced to practice in Milford or Bedford! If you feel all our teams should be able to continue to play in town, contact the ZBA and Planning Board (letters), and attend the upcoming meetings!!
