JAN. 16
NORDIC SKIING:
SABERS STRONG AT CON-VAL
The Souhegan boys and girls teams were competitive in a 4k skate race against Con-Val and Lebanon.
The Boys A team took second place behind Lebanon, with Anthony Caruso (11:41) finishing first place overall. Jack Chapman (12:30) and Sam Lowell (12:38) also had a strong race coming in third and fourth respectively.
The Boys B Team out skied the competition, taking first place overall, as well as the top three spots in the race. Alex Rodd (12:19) had an impressive first-place finish. Also skiing well were Matt Benoit (13:05) taking second, Jason Bender (13:45) finishing third, Cooper Flanders (6th; 16:05), Keller Nunley (11th; 17:15) and Conor Schultz (12th; 17:30).
The girls A team couldn’t be stopped, with another first-place finish. Marissa Ashcraft (14:24) had a great race, finishing second for the team. Rachel Springmann (14:55) grabbed third, with Jordan Springmann (15:29) placing fourth. Also skiing well were Christina Clemence (9th; 16:40), Katherine Benoit (11th; 17:12), and Megan Lynch (12th; 17:24).
The girls B team came in third overall, but held 3 of the top 4 finishing times. Pia Marciano placed first with an impressive time of 17:17. Ryleigh Mullens (20:25) skied competitively to place third, followed by a strong fourth-place finish by Abigail Anson (20:32).
JAN. 15
BOYS BASKETBALL:
MILFORD 88, MONADNOCK 39
The Spartans (6-0) had little trouble with the Grizzlies (0-6). Mike O’Loughlin led four Milford players in double figures with a game-high 18 points. Jeff Asselin added 14 points while Scott McCallum and Kevin Kent had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
MILFORD 59, MONADNOCK 44
Freshman Dina Pitsas scored 11 of her game-high 15 in second half to help the Spartans pull away for the road win in East Swanzey.
As a team, Milford was 22-for-30 from the free throw line to make up the difference. Taylor Sacco scored 13 and blocked four shots, while Bri Corron recorded nine steals to go along with her 10 points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
SOUHEGAN 53, BEDFORD 50
The Sabers (5-1) withstood a late comeback attempt by the Bulldogs (2-5) to win their fifth straight game.
Jane White hit three 3-pointers en route to a game-high 17 points to lead the Souhegan offense. Christan Wojtas joined White in double figures with 12 points while Stephanie Wesson (four points, five steals), Jackie Jones (four points, seven rebounds) and Molly Dalton (four points, seven rebounds) also played well.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
NEWMARKET 35, WLC 25
Offense was tough to come by for either team in this one, but Newmarket managed to make up the difference at the free throw line in a win at Wilton. Sam Broderick and Kalie Randlett led the Warriors with five points each.
BOYS BASKETBALL:
NEWMARKET 51, WLC 35
Tory Rysnik scored 14 points to lead the Warriors offense, but it wasn’t enough as Newmarket pulled out the 16-point home win.
JAN. 13
BOYS HOCKEY: SOUHEGAN 6, MONADNOCK 5
Quinn Carroll had two goals and Dan Conroy, Evan Dressel, John Maguire and Joe Stacy had one each as Souhegan improved to 3-2 on the season.
Conroy added an assist, and the Sabers got single assists from Brendan Dix, Ben Rafferty, Isiah Silvia-Chandley and Connor Casey.
WRESTLING: MILFORD 48, SOUHEGAN 17
In a varsity wrestling match that included four no contests and four forfeits, Milford got impressive victories from Peter Benoit at 171 pounds and Josh Kilgore at 215 to improve to 2-3 on the season.
JAN. 12
BOYS BASKETBALL:
MILFORD 73, SOUHEGAN 56
Dominating inside with their athleticism and scoring with the long ball from the outside (six three-pointers), the undefeated Spartans (5-0) routed the Sabers at home behind Mike O’Loughlin’s 23 points. Jamie Holder added 14, Mike Mitchell had 12 and Kyle Nelson chipped in 11 for Milford. Milford’s interior defense stifled almost every inside shot the Sabers (4-1) took all night, explaining why their scoring was led by guards Seth Cordts (12 points) and Jack Nelson (10 points).
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
SOUHEGAN 61, MILFORD 43
Jane White scored 18 points and helped steady the Sabers (4-1) through a third-quarter Milford comeback in front of a capacity crowd in Milford. Christan Wojtas drilled three three-pointers for Souhegan, while Jackie Jones added 16 points. Bri Corron and Jackie Caswell led the Spartans (0-6) with 10 points each.
BOYS BASKETBALL:
PITTSFIELD 61, WLC 51
The Eagles (5-1) outscored the Warriors 42-22 in the second half to roll to a 10-point win in Pittsfield.
Ryan Burke led the Warriors (4-2) with 14 points while Adam Edmunds and Steven Heck also hit for double-figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
PITTSFIELD 35, WLC 32
The Warriors (4-3) suffered through a poor shooting night in their three-point loss to the Eagles (4-6) at home.
Marika Thompson scored a game-high 14 points but Wilton missed many layups throughout the contest allowing Pittsfield to escape with the win.
JAN. 10
INDOOR TRACK:
SOUHEGAN BOYS THIRD, GIRLS FOURTH
The Souhegan boys track and field team rode a school-record performance by the 4x160 meter relay team for third place at the weekly meet at UNH.
Competing with mostly Class L schools, the Sabers boys team scored 40 points, behind 59 for Winnacunnet and 45 for Londonderry, but ahead of Alvirne, Spaulding, Dover, Milford, Trinity and Goffstown. Mike Peret was first in the 55-meter dash (6.6 seconds) and the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches).
The Souhegan girls team earned fourth place (35) behind Londonderry (78), Winnacunnet (58) and Alvirne (54), but in front of Trinity, Milford, Spaulding, Dover and Goffstown. The sole first-place finisher for the Sabers girls was Isabella Stuopis with a personal best of 33-9 3⁄4 in the shot put.
SWIMMING: MILFORD GIRLS SWEEP
Milford’s girls swim team defeated Concord, John Stark, Kearsarge and Stevens in a Sunday meet. Suzie Meiman was first in the 500-free in 6:33.27 and the 400-free relay team of Amanda Clark, Meiman, Ellie Halstead and Megham Bouffard was first in 4:38.78.
The Milford boys topped John Stark and Stevens and fell to Concord and Kearsarge. Casey Delage was first in 200 free in 2:05.63 and third in 100 fly in 1:15.64.
JAN. 9
BOYS HOCKEY:
SOUHEGAN 4, PORTSMOUTH 2
Erik Hayden had a spectacular night in net for the Sabers (2-2) with 30 saves, while Quinn Carroll potted two goals and Carson Burke added one as well in Exeter.
GIRLS HOCKEY:
BISHOP GUERTIN 7, SOUHEGAN 1
Morgan Enos and Megan Turner scored two goals each as the Cardinals trounced the Sabers. Kayla Lambert, Sara Crespo and Emily Duran also scored for BG (4-0). Christiana Carlini made 16 saves in net for the victors.
NORDIC SKIING:
SOUHEGAN BOYS TAKE FIRST
The Sabers’ boys team finished first in their class and third out of 21 teams overall in the 5K Classic in North Conway. Souhegan was led by Nick Murphy, who finished fifth overall in a time of 13:27.
Anthony Caruso finished in 22nd place for the Sabers. The girls team finished 10th out of 19 teams, but third in its class. Rachel Springmann led the girls team with a 47th-place finish in 19:02.
JAN. 8
BOYS BASKETBALL:
SOUHEGAN 63, MONADNOCK 32
DJ Petropulos and Devin Gilligan scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, as the Sabers cruised to victory at home.
Gilligan also chipped in with five assists, while teammate Brendan McKenna recorded three blocks to go along with his eight points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
SOUHEGAN 67, MONADNOCK 37
Jane White led three Sabers players in double figures with 15 points in their 30-point road win over the Huskies.
JAN. 6
INDOOR TRACK:
MILFORD GIRLS SET RECORDS
The distance medley team of Peggy Lai, Cassie Sebas, Cassie Wright and Courtney Hawkins took first place at the Wildcat Relays, setting a school record of 13 minutes, 42.5 seconds in the process.
The shuttle hurdle relay team – KayJay Rooke, Amanda Clark, Sarah Martinaeu and Hannah Ladeau – also set a school record while taking fifth place at the meet with a time of 38.63.
WRESTLING: BEDFORD 39, MILFORD 30
Thomas Scannell (112 pounds), Joe Albina (160) and Josh Kilgore (189) all recorded victories via the pin, but the Spartans suffered a tough loss against the Bulldogs.
BOYS HOCKEY: SOUHEGAN 10, M/I-L 1
Ben Rafferty scored a hat trick and assisted on one more goal as the Sabers coasted to a nine-goal win over Moultonborough/Inter-Lakes at Laconia Ice Rink.
Quinn Carroll also scored three goals, while Souhegan teammate Joe Stacy chipped in with two and Dan Conroy and Carson Burke added one each. Conroy and Evan Dressel recorded two assists in the game, while Isiah Silvia-Chandley and Connor Casey helped out on one goal each. Eric Hayden and Ryan Peterson combined for 19 saves in net for Souhegan (1-2).
JAN. 5
BOYS BASKETBALL: MILFORD 80, H/B 40
Mike O’Loughlin scored 21 points and Jamie Holder added 19 to lead the Milford High School boys basketball team to an 80-40 win over Hollis/Brookline in a Class I matchup.
O’Loughlin (eight) and Holder (12) combined for 20 of Milford’s 28 points in the third quarter. The Spartans (3-0) scored 50 points in the second half, while holding the Cavaliers (1-3) to just five in the fourth quarter.
Milford also got 10 points from Mike Mitchell and eight from Kevin Kent, as 10 players scored for the Spartans.
H/B was led by Daniel Baerthlein, who scored 10 points, and Brian Liamos, who added nine.
GIRLS BASKETBALL:
SOUHEGAN 58, JOHN STARK 49
Christan Wojtas had a big night for the 2-1 Sabers with 22 points and seven rebounds, while Jane White added 11 points, eight assists and four steals. Lauren Cordts led Souhegan with 11 rebounds to go with her seven points. Katie Cullerot led John Stark with 22 points.
BOYS BASKETBALL:
SOUHEGAN 69, JOHN STARK 49
Devin Gilligan’s 20 points helped keep the Sabers unbeaten at 3-0. Trailing 24-21 after one quarter, Souhegan, led by five of Seth Cordts’ 16 points, outscored the visitors 14-4 to take control.
