ALPINE SKIING

Lambert qualifies for Eastern team at Meet of Champions

FRANCONIA – Milford High School’s Ben Lambert and Bishop Guertin High School’s Tucker Gettel recorded the top runs for local skiers at the 2010 Alpine Meet of Champions at Cannon Mountain (located within Franconia Notch State Park) last week.

Gettel (1 minute, 16.27 seconds on two combined runs) and Lambert (1:16.56) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the boys Slalom. Taking the top spot in slalom was Concord’s Sam Stewart (1:13.22), followed by Kennett teammates Max Brennick (1:13.65) in second and Hunter Haynes in third (1:15.16). Exeter’s Blake Linehan (1:15.30) was fourth, as the top six earned medals.

Other locals finishing in the top 25 were Hollis/Brookline’s Erik Lafrance (1:21.43) in 15th and BG’s John Sheetz (1:23.18) in 23rd.

In boys Giant Slalom action, Gettel (1:09.29) finished 15th and Lambert (1:09.76) finished 20. Right behind Lambert in 21st was H/B’s Lafrance (1:10.49).

Winning the event was Kennett’s Jake VanDeursen (1:05.25), followed by Concord’s Stewart (1:06.74), Bow’s Jake Hughes (1:06.84), Kearsarge’s Nick Iacopino (1:07.44), Lebanon’s Micah Berman (1:07.83) and Kennett’s Haynes (1:07.93).

In girls action on the slopes, Plymouth’s Nika Mosenthal (1:18.71) took the top spot in the Slalom at Cannon.

Following her in the next five spots were Littleton’s Hailey Sarausky (1:19.23), Kennett’s Amber McPherson (1:19.91), Profile’s Paige Roberts (1:20.21), Derryfield’s Carla Nyquist (1:22.43) and Kennett’s Taylor Gardella (1:22.70).

Locals skiing to top 35 spots were BG’s Brianna Berge (1:30.87) in 22nd, Nashua South’s Amy Jenness (1:33.17) in 28th and Souhegan’s Evelyn French (1:35.12) in 33rd.

In the girls Giant Slalom, BG’s Ashley Loughran (1:12.57) was the top local finisher in 22nd. She was followed by Berge (1:13.09) in 25th and Jenness (1:14.67) in 30th.

The top six in the event were Kennett’s Molly Shannon (1:07.73), Roberts (1:08.19), Nyquist (1:08.35), Mosenthal (1:08.58), McPherson (1:09.09) and Sarausky (1:09.29).

The top 12 boys and girls qualified for the New Hampshire Select Alpine Team based on the place points earned in their two best runs at Wednesday’s event.

Making up the New Hampshire Select Alpine girls team is: Mosenthal, Shannon, Roberts, Sarausky, McPherson, Profile’s Casey Clark, Nyquist, Plymouth’s Annie D’Elia, Gardella, Kearsarge’s Andrea Iacopino, Bishop Brady’s Bridget Bryck, Plymouth’s Michaela Wright, as well as alternates Bedford’s Jessa Fahey, Lin-Wood’s Liza Tetley and Kearsarge’s Helena Kratochvilova.

Representing the Granite State boys will be: VanDeursen, Stewart, Brennick, Hughes, Haynes, Linehan, Iacopino, Lambert, Berman, Gilford’s Gunnar Stecher, Gilford’s Michael Workman, Gorham’s Bobby Langlands, as well as alternates Gettel and Kearsarge’s Dom Torro.

INDOOR TRACK

Sabers, Spartans solid at New Englands

ROXBURY, Mass. – Souhegan High School and Milford High School sent groups of athletes from their respective schools to the 23rd annual New England Interscholastic Boys and Girls Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College.

Leading the way for Souhegan was Michael Peret, who ran 6.66 seconds for 10th in the 55-meter dash, while also scoring 17th with a 6-1 high jump. Chris Chininis long jumped 18-61⁄2 for 27th place, while Isabella Stuopis took 28th in the shot put (30-11).

Also, the Sabers’ 4x200 meter relay team of Parker Hall, Dennis Elverson, Chininis and Peret ran 1:35.79 to place 17th.

That foursome, based on their Class I record time, has qualified and will compete in the Nike National Meet on March 13, again at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Milford also sent some athletes over the border.

The Spartans boys 4x800 team of Nick Muller, Corey Hahnl, Connor Jackson and Connor Crowley made all New Englands by placing sixth with a new school record time of 8:08.37.

They also qualified for Nationals next weekend.

Milford freshman Courtney Hawkins placed ninth in the mile with a time of 5:17.61, while the girls 4x800 team of Cassie Sebas, Peggy Lai, Dina Pitsas and Courtney Hawkins placed 13th in 9:55.0.

Also turning in solid performances were Bri Corron in the 55-meter and long jump and Tom St. Cyr in the 55-meter hurdles.

BOYS HOCKEY

Sabers advance to Final Four

HENNIKER – Erik Hayden stopped 25 shots and Quinn Carroll buried two on the opposition, as Souhegan High School advanced to the Division III Final Four with a quarterfinal win over John Stark at New England College.

Dan Conroy added the third Sabers goal, while Joe Stacy and Ben Rafferty recorded assists in the process.

Their opponent in the semifinals will be top-seeded Kennett, which cruised to a 6-0 win in its quarterfinal with Portsmouth.
