More than trees and pancakes
Thursday, November 10, 2011
You know them as the folks who sell Christmas trees every year and who run a wonderful pancake breakfast, all to raise money for good causes.
But the people who make up the Milford Rotary Club do more than that and one of the things they do at their weekly Wednesday lunches is listen to interesting and informative speakers.
For instance, they recently had representatives of Lamprey Health Care and, the next week, Dawn Reams of Bridges, the Milford-Nashua organization that helps victims of domestic violence.
Sometimes they have politicians and once, several years ago, we recall, they had someone speak about unidentified flying objects.
We believe these Wednesday talks are important. Members of Rotary are community leaders of one sort or another, some political, some in business, and when someone like Reams gets their attention, as she did, they can help to carry her message to a wider group of people.
Indeed, The Cabinet has recently made it our business to attend some of these meetings in order to report on what the speakers have to say. We did so with Lamprey and with Bridges (the former story appeared last week, the latter is on our Business Page this week). Thanks to Rotary, we had an opportunity to help spread important information.
Naturally, as is the wont of our Rotarian friends, we had to take our share of verbal “abuse” and pay a “fine” of $1 that, we know will go for a good cause. It seems to us that everything Rotary does is for a good cause.
We just think our readers should know that the men and women selling Christmas trees and dishing out pancakes do much more on Wednesdays that just eat some pretty darn good food and poke fun at perfectly innocent reporters. They’re listening to people with important things to say.
You might want to think about doing it with them. Just make sure you always have a dollar bill.
