Go get ’em at George Mason
Thursday, January 19, 2012
Ten out of 14. That’s 71 percent. That’s how often Milford High School’s We the People team has won the state championship.
They did it again in December and now they’re planning to go to the national finals at George Mason University in Virginia in April.
To get there, each of the 33 student has to raise $1,000 for the trip and they need help. That’s where you come in: You can help the team by sending a tax-deductable contribution to Milford High School, c/o We the People, 100 West St., Milford, NH 03055. No, it doesn’t have to be $1,000; any amount will help.
For those who don’t know, and as we reported last week, We the People is a nationwide program of in-depth study of the U.S. Constitution that leads to state and national competitions. It’s a tough course and a tough contest, as anyone who has ever had a chance to read the Bill of Rights will know. Really, what is the 12th Amendment? These kids will know.
It’s one of those courses that usually doesn’t resonate with people outside the class because, until you read about it in The Cabinet, you don’t really know it’s happening. After all, you assume Milford High has math classes and English and history but you don’t hear a lot of discussion about We the People.
But kids who have participated in it in years past not only know about it, they remember it fondly.
Dave Alcox has been the coach since the program’s inception and neither we nor anyone else can ever give him the credit he deserves.
Knowing Alcox, he would deflect that credit onto his students, anyway; that’s just the kind of guy he is.
But, Mr. Alcox, we want you to know that the students aren’t the only ones who appreciate what you’re doing. Go get ‘em at George Mason.
