On Wednesday, Feb. 8, the Mont Vernon School District will hold its Deliberative Session to discuss, and possibly amend, warrant articles. Such a session needs to be held because the district operates under Senate Bill 2, the ballot voting law that has done away with the traditional school district meeting.

Among the warrant articles to be discussed, along with the proposed school operating budget is a proposal to rescind SB2 and return to the school district meeting. While it is safe to assume that the SB2 question will appear on the March 13 ballot, attending the meeting and voicing your point of view is important so that school officials understand of how you feel.

It’s easy to say they’ll know how we feel when we vote on March 13, but that isn’t necessarily enough. School officials aren’t mind readers, so they can’t always discern the meaning of a vote. If one were to vote against rescinding SB2, would it be because that person doesn’t want to attend school district meetings? Or does that person think having SB2 gives voters more control because more of them will participate than would in a school district meeting? And if the latter, is that a comment on decisions made by school district officials?

If you have a strong point of view on this – see our letters page in today’s issue – you need to express it with more than a check mark.
