Bridges to stay open

MILFORD – Community support for Bridges means the Milford office of the nonprofit domestic and sexual violence support agency will stay open.

The office had been in danger of closing this summer after state and federal funding dried up, but individuals, foundations, organizations and churches “rallied to the cause,” said Sylvia Gale, a member of the Bridges’ Board of Directors. “The Souhegan Valley community has pulled together.”

The outpouring of support is especially heartening, she said, in light of the recent closure of two other essential services: Host Homes and Milford Mediation.

Now the agency is working to build a network of support to make sure it stays open permanently.

Part of that effort will include an open house at the 16 Elm St. office on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Board members and staff members will be there to answer questions and share refreshments.

Those who are not able to go to the open house can tour the Milford facility on Oct. 25, between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. Lunch will be served.

The Milford office serves Amherst, Milford, Hollis, Brookline, Wilton, Lyndeborough, Mont Vernon and parts of Merrimack. It has been in Milford for 15 years, first in the attic of Church of Our Saviour, and then in its current location sharing a building with Milford Family Guidance.

Along with its 24-hour support line, 883-3044, Bridges serves walk-in clients, goes to court with people, and has education and outreach programs. Two weekly support groups serve domestic violence victims and adult victims of childhood sexual abuse.

For more information or to RSVP for the open house or the tour contact Bridges at 672-9833.
