High School Highlights
MILFORD
BOYS BASKETBALL
Jan. 13: Hanover 47, Milford 43
The Spartans had a 33-27 lead after three quarters, but couldn’t hold on as they lost to an undefeated Hanover team. Logan Barlow led Milford with 12 points. The Spartans are 2-4 on the season.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Jan. 14: Hanover 42, Milford 33
Down by just two at halftime, the Spartans (2-5) were outscored 15-9 in the third quarter as Hanover pulled away.
Dina Pitas had 13 points and Jen Dupuis added eight, including a pair of three-pointers, for Milford.
Jan. 17: Windham 44, Milford 31
The Spartans held a five-point halftime lead, but Windham was able to mount a comeback in the second half and pick up the win at home.
Dina Pitsas led Milford with 11 points, while Jen Dupuis added six in the loss. Milford is now 2-6 while Windham improved to 6-2.
BOYS SWIMMING
Jan. 14: Milford sweeps
The Milford boys swim team won a pair of dual meets on Friday night in Salem.
The Spartans defeated Timberlane Regional of Plaistow, 72-16, and beat Salem 76-17.
For Milford, Peter Bussiere won the 100-meter freestyle and was second in the 50 freestyle, qualifying for the state meet in both events.
Jack Betelak placed second and Josh Hamal was third in the 50 freestyle for Milford. James Magri and Betelak went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle and Jason Magri won the 500 freestyle and Adam Magri took second in the 100 backstroke.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Jan. 14: Milford goes 2-1
The Milford girls swim team lost to Salem, 107-61, but defeated both Timberlane (85-64) and Wilton-Lyndeborough (115-12) in a meet Friday night in Salem.
Kaitlyn McManus won the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly and qualified for the state meet in both events for the Spartans.
Other Milford highlights inlcuded a thrid from Sarah Halstead in the 500 freestyle and personal best times by Kayla Kennedy in the 100 breaststroke, Eric Gendron in the 100 butterfly and Molly McGuire in the 100 freestyle.
WRESTLING
Jan. 11: Milford 45, Bedford 25
Pins by the Bellantoni brothers and a come-from-behind pin by freshman Rueben Carson highlighted a match that was closer than the score would indicate.
The Spartans lost five matches but managed to stay off their backs in all but two. Freshman J.T. Bellantoni had a pin victory at 106 and heavyweight brother Andrew also won by pin.
Other winners for the Spartans were Thomas Scannell at 126, Devin Dolliver at 132, Connor Borne at 152, Andrew Myer at 170, Joe Albina at 182 and Jordan Gaudette at 220.
Milford improved its dual meet record to 7-2.
SOUHEGAN
BOYS HOCKEY
Jan. 14: Souhegan 2, Con-Val 2 OT
The Sabers led 2-0 in the second period, but Con-Val tied the game early in the third period and the teams skated to a tie in Division III action. Mike Hayden had a goal and an assist while Stevie Upton also scored for Souhegan, which outshot the Cougars 36-14.
BOYS SWIMMING
Jan. 14: Sabers win a pair in quad-meet
Souhegan squeeked by Bow 79-70, over-powered Derryfield School 90-7 and lost to Bedford 92-70.
Leading the Sabers was Eric Howard, who just missed two school records and won the 200 IM and took second in the 100 butterfly. His brother Ty Howard won the 200 free and 100 free, Jamie Lutze won the 50 free and took third in the 500 free and Bobby Graham was second in the 100 free and third in the 100 free.
Also placing was Alex Bedard with a third in the 200 free and Mike Rego a third in the 200 IM.
The 200 Medley relay team of Graham, Lutze, Howard and Bedard won their race, while the 200 free relay of Graham, Ty Howard, Rego and Bedard also won.
GIRLS SWIMMING
Jan. 14: Sabers win 2 of 3
The Souhegan girls lost to Bedford 108-61, but beat Derryfield 86-14 and Bow 117-80.
Leading the girls against a strong Bedford squad was Olivia Wons, who was first in the 100 free and second in the 200 free, with Christine Black taking third.
Also placing a strong second in the 50 free and 500 free was Jamie Freud with Taylor Study pulling in third in the 500.
Also placing was Shannon Disco with a third in the 100 butterfly while all of the relays placed second in close races.
WRESTLING
Jan. 11: Spaulding 36, Souhegan 26
Conner Chareth recorded a 14-7 win over Zachary Hobbs at 126 pounds, but it wasn’t enough in the Sabers’ loss to the Red Raiders. Mitchell Illacqua (113), Lyle Bellamy (120), Cameron Crook (220) and Brandon Wood (285) also had wins for Souhegan while Michael Olson (160) and James Ewing (182) each lost a close match.
Jan. 14: Manchester Central 48, Souhegan 18
The Sabers got three pins against the Little Green, but couldn’t pull out the win against a Division I opponent. Mitchell Illacqua (113), Conner Chareth (120) and Calem Jackson (285) each had a win for Souhegan.
