Scouts’ food drive deserves support
Friday, November 13, 2009
Last weekend, Scouts in several area communities hit the roads and left door hangers at thousands of homes to notify residents about the annual Scouting for Food program.
Chances are, you probably received one.
This Saturday, the Scouts will be back, hoping to find nonperishable items such as canned goods, cereal, coffee, pasta and other items that local food pantries need to keep their shelves stocked heading into the winter months.
Don’t let them down.
Not only is this a convenient way to make a difference for your neighbors, it’s also a valuable lesson about service and caring for the participants.
Please show these young people what kind of a community they live in by doing what you can to make this effort a huge success.
If you didn’t receive a door hanger last week, or somehow don’t get your goods picked up on Saturday, you can still drop food off at the Milford Fire Station, the main collection site for the effort, by 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Volunteers are still needed at the fire station, as well. For more information on volunteers – or on donating boxes – call 673-2931.
Times are still hard for many more people these days, but even in boom times, hunger never goes away, which is why programs such as this one are vital.
