The Brookline Lions Club will hold its 65th annual Penny Sale (formerly the Infant Jesus Penny Sale) on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Richard Maghakian Memorial School in Brookline. This is a big fundraiser for SHARE and other local charities within our community.

What is a penny sale and how does it work? Foremost it is a night filled with fun, laughs, good food and, of course, chances to win great prizes. We ask local businesses and individuals to donate items or services to be raffled. Each donated item is put on display the night of the Penny Sale with a sign naming who donated each item.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the raffle tickets are sold in bags of 500 tickets for $5.

Each bag contains a set of 100 tickets in five different colors. Stapled to the outside of each bag is a piece of paper with the matching numbers that you keep. To bid on items, go to the tables that have all the donated items and place tickets in the buckets of the items you want to win. The more tickets you put in, the better your chance of winning. Also there is a clear baggie stapled to the outside of your bag that you put into a canister near the stage for random door prizes that are drawn throughout the night.

There are other raffles that are separate from the penny sale items. The Surf ā€˜nā€™ Turf Basket and the Thanksgiving Basket tickets are $2 each or three for $5. There is the $2 table, which contains higher priced items that deserve special attention. These tickets are also $2 each or three for $5.

Also raffled are five $100 bills. These cash raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

There will also be a concession stand with food donated by local residents. Included at the stand is chili, cornbread, hot dogs, hot pretzels, popcorn, sausages w/peppers and onions and much more. The Weathervane Seafood Restaurant sets up a station and sells chowder and donates the proceeds to the penny sale.

At 7 p.m. the penny raffle ends and the ticket pulling begins, one ticket for each item and numbers are read aloud. If it matches one of your numbers that was on the outside your bag, you win the prize.
