DURHAM, NC – Sandra L. “Sandy” Fessenden, 71, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013 at Duke University Hospital, following a short illness.

A longtime resident of Brookline, NH, Sandy was born in Fitchburg, MA on March 21, 1942, the eldest daughter of the late Waldo and Barbara (Arsenault) Safford.

She was a graduate of Nashua High School and attended the University of New Hampshire. Sandy worked for New England Telephone before leaving to raise two children. She later returned to work for the town of Brookline, serving in multiple functions including Secretary of the Planning Board, Town Treasurer, and Assistant Town Clerk. She and her husband Allan retired to Edenton, North Carolina in 2000, where they have lived since.

Sandy loved to be around water; she was an avid sailor who could be spotted out on Lake Potanipo in Brookline almost every summer day, often racing catamarans with her father and children or towing them skiing with the motorboat. Some of her fondest memories were of the summers spent with her family at the beach in York, Maine. She was a loving wife and mother, and a loyal friend who could always be counted on for a quick smile and laugh and for comfort and support during times of need.

Sandy also enjoyed traveling and photography, and she was an avid bridge player and a fantastic baker.

She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends, including her beloved husband of 50 years, Allan; her two devoted children, Pamela and Michael; her sisters Diane (Safford) Armstrong of Goldsboro, NC and Cindy (Safford) Herl of Clearfield, Utah; as well as a large extended family. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Sandy’s life on June 30, 2013 in Brookline, NH.
