Woman’s Club hosts prison talks

The Hollis Woman’s Club is presenting a free series of three lectures on the impacts of incarceration of women in New Hampshire. The lecture will be held from 7-8:15 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 30, Feb. 6 and Feb. 13 at the Hollis Social Library.

Titled “Take the Keys and Lock Her Up,” each lecture discusses a different topic on this theme. Talks will be given by Liz Tentarelli and Peg Fargo, members of the League of Women Voters and co-chairwomen of the Impact of Women.

The lecture series includes the following
topics:

Jan 30: “Fact from Myth.”

Let’s separate fact from myth as we discuss the characteristics of the female offender, the effects on families of women who are incarcerated and the inequity of the state’s prison system.

Feb. 6: “Alternative Sentencing.”

Should every offender go to jail? Grafton County offers a drug court for selected offenders who complete an intensive program instead of sentencing them and sending them to jail. Alternative sentencing can be life altering. What are other options for alternative sentencing?

Feb. 13: “Education and Vocational Training.”

Keys to women becoming self-sufficient and able to provide a living wage for themselves and their children are education and vocational training. What’s offered at Goffstown? How could we improve? The state of New Hampshire is considering privatizing the prisons. Will it save money? Is it a good idea? Why?
