JAN. 19

BOYS BASKETBALL:

H/B 48, ST. THOMAS 45

St. Thomas High School had not one, but two chances to tie the game up with seconds left in regulation in a 48-45 loss to Hollis/Brookline High School on Tuesday night.

The Saints missed on their first 3-point attempt with 5 seconds remaining in the game and then on the follow-up off a long rebound that was on line but fell short at the buzzer.

Dan Baerthlien scored a team-high 15 points for the Cavaliers (3-4), while teammate Bryan Landry chipped in with nine of his own in the win.

GIRLS BASKETBALL:

H/B 73, ST. THOMAS 56

Julia Stopera posted a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, as the Cavaliers cruised to a 17-point win over the Saints.

Sultana Svirk led the Cavs with 14 points, while also hitting the glass hard with nine rebounds of her own in the win.

Kelly Morgan and Kelsey Berry also had solid days from the floor, chipping in with 11 and nine points, respectively.

JAN. 16

WRESTLING: CAVS FIFTH

AT GIONET MEMORIAL

Hollis/Brookline High School came in fifth out of 17 teams with the help of five wrestlers placing during the Daniel Gionet Memorial Tournament in Pelham.

The Cavaliers finished with 951⁄2 points, finishing behind Con-Val, Whittier Tech. (Haverhill, Mass.), Pentucket Regional (West Newbury, Mass.) and Westerly (R.I.).

Bryan Jennings took second with a 7-1 loss to Pentucket’s Jordan Pinzone in the finals.

Finishing the event in third place for Hollis/Brookline was Zach Jennings at 125, while fourth place finishers were Zach McPherson (103), Chris Roukas (112) and Brian Litchfield (145).

JAN. 15

GIRLS BASKETBALL:

H/B 49, COE-BROWN 32

It was the Cavaliers (6-0) that prevailed with strong defensive play and rebounding in their win over the Black Bears (5-1) in a battle of Class I unbeatens.

Katie Stopera (eight rebounds) and Kelly Morgan had 11 points each to lead the offense.

Julia Stopera added nine points while Sultana Svirk had seven points and six rebounds.

SKIING:

CAVS TAKE SECOND

Hollis/Brookline had a nice afternoon on the slopes at Crotched Mountain, unfortunately Bow found a way to beat out the runner-up Cavaliers for the top spot in the slalom race.

H/B’s top finisher came on the boys side of things with Erik LaFrance skiing to second place with a two-run total of 60.99 seconds.

Other H/B boys finishing in the top 15 were Evan Cooke (fourth, 62.72), Pat Doyle (11th, 71.74) and Ben Currier (15th, 77.37).

In girls action, Haley Farwell (eighth, 85.32) led the Cavaliers skiers.

She was followed by teammates Kelly Doyle (10th, 86.78), Melissa Lavey (12th, 87.89), Kelsey Tulley (13th, 87.95) and Lorie Lavey (14th, 88.70).

H/B takes to the slopes again on Thursday for a giant slalom race at Crotched Mountain.

JAN. 13

WRESTLING: H/B BEATS

JOHN STARK, NEWFOUND

Hollis/Brookline improved to 6-0 with a pair of victories, taking a tight match from John Stark 42-36 and beating Newfound Regional of Bristol, 64-15.

Double winners for the Cavaliers during the three-team meet were Zach McPherson, Chris Roukas, Brian Litchfield, Taylor Landry and Zach Mignealt.
