Cavs’ girls relay team sets record

DURHAM – Two individuals and three relay teams from the area set records in the University of New Hampshire pool at Sunday’s Meet of Champions.
The Hollis/Brookline girls 200 medley relay foursome of Emily Davis, Stephanie Shoults, Chiara Secules and Sara Heard set an MOC record with a first-place swim of 1:57.53.
Individually, Souhegan High School’s Andy Disco grabbed first in the 100-yard backstroke, setting a new MOC record in 53.50 seconds. Nashua High School North’s Alex Hennessy also set an individual mark with a 22.63 swim for first in the boys 50-yard freestyle. That knocked Mont Vernon native Ian Will from the books after he set the mark (22.95) last year for Derryfield School.
Two other local relay team’s came up big, as Souhegan’s 200 free relay team of Mallory Sullivan, Alyssa Peterson, Emily Rego and Kelsey Hinrichs swam to first in 1 minute, 46.32 seconds to best Merrimack’s mark of 1:46.48 set last year.
The record-setters aside, there were three more championship swims by area athletes.
Disco picked up his second first of the meet with a 1:01.53 swim in the 100-yard breaststroke for the Sabers; Secules swam a 59.59 to win the 100-yard butterfly for the Cavaliers; and the Bishop Guertin boys foursome of Cody Gilchrist, Ryan Conceicao, Aron Reynolds and Victor Puksta won the 200 medley relay in 1:44.06.
There were plenty of locals finishing in the top three on Sunday.
BG’s Haley Hullihen was second in the girls 1-meter diving (135.40 score), while Reynolds was second in the 200-yard IM (2:06.18) and third in the 100-yard back (56.73), and Gilchrist earned silver in the boys 100-yard fly (55.45).
The Cardinals’ foursome of Reynolds, Sam Burnett, Puksta and Gilchrist also grabbed a top three spot, teaming up for second in the 400 free relay (3:26.46).
The Sabers’ girls 200 medley relay team finished third (1:58.53), with their boys team – Disco, Eric Howard, Bobby Graham and Jamie Lutze – finishing second (1:47.33) just ahead of Derryfield’s unit which includes Will and Amherst’s Hunter Holbrook in third (1:50.14). Also standing out for Souhegan was Hinrichs with a silver (25.54) in the 50-yard free and Mallory Sullivan with a silver (1:11.73) in 100-yard breast.
Hollis/Brookline’s Ken Regan was third in the boys 100-yard breast (1:05.54).
Cavs girls 6th, boys 7th at Division II championships
Souhegan High School was forced to play the role of bridesmaid once again.
The Sabers finished second for the third straight year on the girls side of the pool during Saturday’s Division II Swimming and Diving Championship at the University of New Hampshire.
For the second straight year, they came in behind Division II champion Oyster River, falling 224-184.
“Oyster River swam up,” Souhegan coach James Rezzarday said. “They came to win this one.”
The Sabers finished ahead of third-place finisher St. Thomas (159 points) and fourth-place Bedford (153). Other locals in the pool, Hollis/Brookline (106) and Milford (46), finished sixth and 11th respectively.
On the boys side, the Sabers finished third with a score of 167, coming in behind winner Oyster River (260) and Bedford (186). H/B (72) and Milford (31) finished seventh and 12th, respectively.
In girls individual action, Souhegan’s Mallory Sullivan set a school record with a first-place swim of 1 minute, 10.38 seconds in the 100 breaststroke.
Sabers teammate Kelsey Hinrichs finished second in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 free, while Olivia Wons took sixth in the 200 free and 100 backstroke, and Alyssa Peterson grabbed fourth in the 100 butterfly.
Other locals standing out in the pool were H/B’s Sara Heard with seconds in both the 100 free and 100 back and Chiara Secules with a second in the 100 fly for the Cavaliers. Milford’s Casey Delage also finished top six with a fifth in the 50 free.
In girls relay action, the Sabers’ 200 free relay foursome of Taylor Studley, Emily Rego, Hinrichs, Ali Mensh swam to first in 1:48.54, while the Cavaliers (1:58.33) and Sabers (1:58.72) finished two-three in the 200 medley. The Sabers also grabbed a top three in the 4-by-100 relay with a third-place finish, while the Cavaliers took fifth.
In boys individual action, Souhegan’s Andy Disco stole the show for the local contingent. Disco came up just short of breaking two state records with first-place, school-record setting swims of 53.4 in the 100 back and 1.00.00 in the 100 breast.
Souhegan teammates Eric Howard and Jamie Lutze finished fourth and sixth, respectively in the 100 back. the three Sabers teamed up with Bobby Graham for a first-place swim of 1:47.09 in the 200 medley relay.
Howard also grabbed third in the 50 free and Lutze tied for seventh in the 200 IM.
H/B’s Taylor Owen and Kenny Regan each finished sixth in the 100 fly and 100 free, respectively, while the Cavaliers took fourth and Sabers sixth in the 200 free relay. Souhegan also grabbed the runner-up spot in the 4-by-100 relay.
