H/B boys fourth at Division II Alpine meet

The Hollis/Brookline boys Alpine ski team took fourth at the Division II Alpine State Championships at Waterville Valley on Feb. 9.

The team amassed 630 points, behind Kennett (774.5), Plymouth (749.5) and Bedford (637).

Erik Lafrance finished sixth in the slalom with a two-run time of 60.4 seconds. Overall champion Kennett of Conway had the top three finishers, with Jake VanDeursen taking first place with a time of 57.63 seconds.

Lafrance finished ninth in the giant slalom, with a two-run time of 69.09. VanDeursen won that event as well, finishing in 65.53 seconds.

Lafrance finished in the top 10, making him eligible for the Meet of Champions on March 3 at Cannon Mountain.

Other Cavaliers taking part were Evan Cooke (23rd slalom, did not finish giant slalom), Pat Doyle (33rd slalom, 22nd giant slalom), Tyler Pendleton (34th slalom, 42nd giant slalom), Kalle Anderson (38th slalom), and Chris Hyde (62nd slalom, 35th giant slalom).

Souhegan finished fifth with 616 points, while Milford (433) came in 11th.

Milford’s Ben Lambert grabbed fifth place in slalom with a combined two-run time of 68.12.

Top finishers for Souhegan were Tucker Brown 15th in giant slalom (71.5), Alexander Kempf 17th in giant slalom (71.97), Scott Doyle 23rd in giant slalom (74.21) and 20th in slalom (67.61), Mike Barrett in slalom, Matt Comstock 30th in slalom (72.99) and 32nd in giant slalom (77.53), and John Cici 44th in slalom (81.94).

H/B girls 9th at state championships

The Hollis/Brookline girls took ninth place in the 14-team Division II Alpine Ski Championships at Mount Cranmore in North Conway on Feb. 11.

Lori Lavey was the top Cavaliers finisher in the slalom, taking 26th place with a two-run time of 1 minute, 32.1 seconds. Melissa Lavey was right behind, finishing 27th with a time of 1:32.35 seconds. Kelly Doyle was 32nd (1:33.33) ,Kelsey Tulley was 41st (1:41.98), Brittni Rodgers was 53rd (1:50.01) and Haley Farwell was 71st (2:41.68).

In the giant slalom, Doyle was the top Cavaliers finisher, finishing 39th with a time of 1:46.45. Melissa Lavey was 47th (1:50.75), Tulley was 51st (1:52.34), Rodgers was 56th (1:56.39), Lori Lavey was 66th (2:08.31) and Farwell was 70th (2:21.96).

Evelyn French led Souhegan, which was fifth overall, by finishing 10th in both slalom and giant slalom with combined two-run times of 75.75 and 87.74 respectively to help Souhegan grab fifth place.

Other top finishers for Souhegan were Torey Brooks 18th in slalom (85.70), 12th in giant slalom (88.84), Mary Leger 22nd in slalom (88.42), 29th in giant slalom (101.58), Sami Norton 45th in slalom (104.11) and A.J. Newell 41st in giant slalom (107.28).

The Sabers finished with 634 points behind first place Plymouth (757), Kennett in a close second (754), Hanover (695) in third and Oyster River (638) in fourth.

French’s 10th-place position puts her in the Meet of Champions.
