The mission is good
Friday, September 23, 2011
Need something interesting to do this Sunday? Something you can do with the entire family? Something that will help your community? Something that will make you feel good? Something that will make others feel good? Something that really, really is good?
Then head down to Hardy Hall where the Mission and Action Committee of the Congregational Church of Hollis will be hosting its Mission Fair from 11:30 a.m.-noon.
There, you can learn more about the church’s partnership organizations, including Bridges, St. John Neumann Food Pantry, Ash Street Shelter/Nasua Soup Kitchen, Anne Marie House, and Church World Services. Representatives from those organizations will be there to discuss opportunities to volunteer and serve your community.
You might not realize it, but our ever-thoughtful state Legislature is cutting aid to programs such as these in the apparent belief that “need” is a concept as antiquated as “compassion,” so unless people like you step in to help organizations like the Soup Kitchen or Bridges, it’s pretty darn hard for them to help people who need help. You know, like soup.
Clearly the Mission and Action Committee of the Congregational Church of Hollis realizes something that our caring leaders in Concord don’t: People sometimes need help and if government isn’t going to help them, the church will have to.
But the church can’t do it without you.
So, if you care more about people than does our Legislature, you could show that by going to the Mission Fair and learning more about the organizations that need help so that they can continue to help those who need them. It’s good of them to care.
We know it’s hard to understand sometimes that in the richest nation in the world, people need soup or shelter, but they do. It’s a fact that they can’t pull themselves up by their bootstraps if they don’t have any.
So, do what you can to help. The Mission and Action Committee is.
