When the moon hits your eye ...

Friday, January 20, 2012

Dean Martin sang that, remember? Well, probably not if you’re younger than 50.

“When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore.”

It certainly is if you love pizza, and who doesn’t? OK, vegans, unless they’ve found a way to do cheeseless pizza, which seems like a contradiction in terms.

Ah, but you wonder, what is this in aid of? Why, the Cabinet Press pizza contest, of course, a contest that relies upon you to cast your vote for your favorite pizza. Surely you have one. Everyone has a favorite and can defend his or her favorite pie and favorite pie-making parlor if not to the death, well, at least to the point where you figure it’s time to stop defending and time to start eating because the pizza is getting cold and everyone knows that cold pizza is for the morning after, not for the night you brought it home.

In issues of the Journal, you will find a pizza ballot that you can mail back to us. Or if you have decided to eschew the post office, you can e-mail your choice to sclark@nashua telegraph.com.

The fascinating thing about a pizza is that regardless of what you put on it, you can do no wrong. Now some would argue that putting anchovies on a pizza is most certainly doing wrong but they would be wrong, although we do know one anchovy lover who, out of deference to those of a different opinion, always ordered anchovies on the side, then sprinkled his slices, but he was just such a nice guy.

But anything from sausage to pepperoni to chicken to green pepper to mozzarella and tomato to feta cheese to spinach flies with pizza. There’s just nothing you can do to mess it up.

So, what’s your favorite place to get a pie? When the game’s on and you can’t take the time to cook because THE GAME’S ON, and you pick up the phone to call the pizza place, whom do you call? Vote for that place.

And when you think of pizza, ask yourself this question: Is it pizza place or pizza parlor? Perhaps it depends upon from where you come. And here’s another completely useless fact: When pizza first came to the U.S., it was widely known as “tomato pie.” We’re not sure when it became pizza. If you are, please let us know.
