Teen traveled to see play performed
Thursday, January 26, 2012
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the last in a series of three interviews with the winning student writers and directors of the Riverbend School of Theater Arts’ seventh annual One Act Playwriting Festival.
Sarah Gill, of Gilford, is one of the playwrights for the One Act Playwriting Festival.
Q: Why did you participate in the contest?
A: I participated in this contest in the hopes of having the ability to see my play performed again in a new town and seeing it with a fresh cast. I also heard about it through my English teacher.
Q: What is the name of your play?
A: “The Wednesday Man.”
Q: What is your play about?
A: My play is about an English teacher at an all-boys boarding school who has become depressed with his mundane existence and ends up finding a kindred spirit in a student who comes in for detention.
Q: What gave you the idea for this play?
A: I was observing the habits of my high school English teacher and realized that their job must become repetitive and wondered if it ever breeds sorrow.
Q: What challenges did you face in directing the play?
A: Nothing more than the distance I had to travel. The cast has been very cooperative and fun and Toby’s (producer Toby Tarnow) been very helpful.
Q: What is the most memorable moment in writing or directing the play?
A: I wrote the entire play in one fell swoop at about 2 a.m. last year. That was a triumphant moment for me personally because I’m never able to get that much written in such a short time and still love what I’ve done. Directing has been fun throughout. There have been many laughs and a lot of progress made.
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: I like to write – I hope that came across. I also like to read and go out with friends and such. Nothing exciting.
Q: What are your goals?
A: I would love to attend the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and proceed later to become an author of fiction.
