Nurse to speak on healthy aging at Amherst Town Library
Thursday, February 2, 2012
AMHERST – As part of the Amherst Town Library’s adult evening series of programs in February, it is featuring the theme “The Human Spirit: Adventures and Challenges.”
Registered nurse and geriatric nurse practitioner Paula Koppel will present “Adding Years to Your Life and Life to Your Years: A Roadmap to Enhance Longevity and Wellness,” 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the Johnson Meeting Room. Did you know that it is possible to slow aging and avoid, or at least delay, the disabilities we commonly associate with old age? This program presents the latest research on the physiology of aging and longevity enhancement by exploring four areas of the world, the “Blue Zones,” where people live the longest. Learn how specific lifestyle changes can biologically slow down the aging process. Explore the role of genetics in aging and how lifestyle choices affect the expression of genes. Discover how to create a plan or “roadmap” that will incorporate this important research and protect your most important asset: your health and vitality.
Koppel, founder of Age Well Be Well, is a graduate of the Duke University School of Nursing and has a master’s degree from Boston University and an advanced certificate in counseling and psychology from Lesley University. She was director of geriatrics at the Winchester Hospital for many years. In 1999, she established her own consulting company and is known for developing innovative approaches to health care. She has been a registered nurse and geriatric nurse practitioner for more than 25 years.
This presentation is free and open to the public. However, registration is required due to space limitations. Register by calling 673-2288, e-mailing library@amherst.lib.nh.us, or visiting www.amherst.lib.nh.us and selecting “Calendar of Events.”
Other programs coming up in the series include “It’s Not About the Hike,” 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, and “Exploring America’s Tackiest Tourist Photos with humorist Darren Garnick,” 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28.
