Cartoon failed to recognize true meaning of Christmas

Thursday, January 7, 2010

To the Editor:

It is a sad time when one opens up the Merrimack Journal on Christmas Eve day and sees that, sadly, The Cabinet Press has followed the rest of today’s liberal media’s lead and begun to take Christ out of Christmas.

On Page 6 of the Thursday, Dec. 24, edition of the Holiday Journal I’m looking at a cartoon by artist Bill Green.

In the cartoon, various holiday celebrations are acknowledged under the banner “Happy Holidays!”

There we see a nice representation of a Kinara for Kwanzaa, and there’s a beautiful menorah representing Hanukah, and there’s a Christmas tree, Christmas stockings and cocoa and cookies left out for Santa representing the secular celebration of Christmas, but lo and behold, there is no Nativity scene representing the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ which is, arguably, the most well-known reason for the Dec. 25 holiday.

In a country that was founded by people who were looking for a place to practice religion freely, to see this relentless march to drive Christianity out of our everyday lives perpetuated by your publication is truly sad and, in my opinion, offensive to Christians.

Your paper was always better than that, until now, I’m afraid to say.
