Greater Nashua students recognized in PBS Kids Writers Contest

Friday, June 27, 2014

DURHAM – Poetry about the seasons, a ring-toss game between a cat and a moose, and a day of skiing were among the subjects of winning stories in the New Hampshire Public Television – PBS Kids Writers Contest.

More than 450 creative entries were received from children in kindergarten through third grade, and 85 stories were chosen for first place, second place, third place and honorable mention recognition.

NHPTV’s winners will compete with the winners from other public television stations in the national PBS Kids Writers Contest.

The top local honoree was Emily F., of Nashua, who placed second among first-graders with “Tia Learns a Lesson.”

The first-, second- and third-place winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Saturday, May 10, at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester. Author Diane Mayr will speak at the ceremony. She is a librarian and a longtime New Hampshire resident whose children’s books include “Littlebat’s Halloween Story,” “Run, Turkey, Run!” and “Out and About at the Apple Orchard.”

“By taking this contest into my kindergarten class, I was able to introduce the world of writing to so many youngsters,” sand Kimberly Carrier, a kindergarten teacher in Nashua. “It is by far my favorite part of teaching every year. To see the children go from one thought to an entire story is simply amazing.”

“We are inspired by the enthusiasm and talent demonstrated by the students’ stories,” NHPTV President and CEO Peter Frid said. “And this contest advances NHPTV’s commitment to helping grow children’s literacy skills while encouraging expression and imagination.”
