Kudos for helping others
Friday, January 6, 2012
We can’t say enough about the Merrimack Middle School students and staff who participated in the annual Giving Tree program. According to information submitted to the Journal, which we published last week, 125 tags were chosen from a Giving Tree and gifts were purchased for those less fortunate. It was a partnership between the Lioness Club of Merrimack and the school in Operation Santa.
Good for everyone involved.
By participating in something like the Giving Tree project, kids learn not everyone is as fortunate as they. Some people wouldn’t have a Merry Christmas were it not for organizations like the Lioness Club. The kids who helped out this year might be the Lioness Club members of the future (or Lions Club, for the boys) and, in turn, they may get other kids to help 10 years from now.
It’s important on more than one level: First, of course, the Giving Tree helps ensure a merrier holiday for those who might not have one otherwise. But it also teaches important lessons to those who give: We’re all on this planet together and if we can help, we should help.
After all, if we don’t do it, who will?
If you have a project that needs community involvement, you can let us know and through us, the community.
One of the things the Journal does is encourage our readers to send us stories through our Web site, www.cabinet.com. If you go there, you’ll see a heading that says “Submit Your News,” and we encourage you to do so. Pictures, too. We certainly want to hear from our local schools, but that isn’t all: we want to hear, too, from the Lions Club, the library, the VFW. Any organization, really.
We know you have stories to tell but you know that we can do it all, so we hope you’ll take the time and the opportunity to get your information out there through the Journal and cabinet.com.
Check out the Web site. Give it a try.
