Arthur James Barrett Jr.

Arthur James Barrett Jr., 87, passed away at his home in Merrimack under the care of Beacon Hospice of Nashua on July 22, 2010 after a period of declining health.

He was born in Pittsburgh, PA and was the son of the late Arthur J. Sr. and Etta Mae (Cobb) Barrett. He was raised and educated in Jamaica, Queens, NY, and was a graduate of Jamaica High School. He received a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Arkansas Fayetteville in 1944, and a Masters in electrical engineering from University of Illinois Urbana in 1952.

Arthur spent 2 years working in Venezuela and also in Mississippi for Standard Oil Co. He was an engineer on the Hungry Horse Dam project near West Glacier, MT, and taught electrical engineering at the Indiana Technical College in Fort Wayne, IN.

Upon graduation from University of Illinois, he joined Capeheart-Farnsworth Television Design and Manufacturing Corporation in Fort Wayne, IN.

Mr. Barrett worked at the Advanced Research Laboratory of General Electric in Ithaca, NY, and at Sanders Associates of Nashua. He owned and operated the East Side Laundromat in Manchester, and owned and operated several apartment houses in Manchester. He also enjoyed playing the piano, reading, studying Spanish, boating and hiking in Glacier National Park, the White Mountains and the Adirondack Mountains. He was an accomplished chess player also, having placed 6th in a tournament in Dallas.

Members of the family include his wife of 59 years, Evelyn Carol (Engbarth) Barrett, son George Stanley Barrett of Nashua, daughter Ruth Anne Barrett, and her husband Miles Lewis (Bill) Silberman of Gilmer, TX, son James Sidney Barrett of Manchester, and daughter Carolyn Jean and husband Bruce Scott Alter of Portland, OR. And his sister Dorothy Mae Woods of West Grove, PA, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was recently predeceased by his sister Martha Jane MacLeod Casey.

Calling hours will be Friday August 6, 2010 from 5 to 8PM at the George R. Rivet Funeral Home, 425 Daniel Webster Highway, Merrimack, NH 03054.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday August 7 at 10AM at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 18 Baboosic Lake Road in Merrimack, and burial will conclude at Last Rest Cemetery of Merrimack.
