Joel Samuel Stephens

Joel S. Stephens, 86, a resident of the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton since 2004 died there Friday, January 7, 2011 following a period of failing health. Joel was born in Aransas Pass, Texas, June 4, 1924, son of Edwin and Dovie (Hobbs) Stephens. He lived in St. Augustine, FL for several years and prior to moving to Tilton lived in Merrimack for 15 years. Joel served with the Merchant Marines for a year and later retired from the U.S. Navy following 20 years of service, serving both fronts during WWII, Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis and Vietnam. He then worked with Exxon-Mobil as a mechanic, repairing tugs and barges. He was predeceased by his wife, Norma Leone (Amero) Stephens. His family includes his daughter, Donna S. MacNeill and husband Harry, Jacksonville Beach, FL; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Stephens of Texas.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at a later date at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, NH 03303.
Arrangements are under the care of the William F. Smart Sr. Memorial Home in Tilton, NH.
