GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dec. 16: Merrimack 60, Alvirne 50

Junior guard Kate Cole exploded for a career-high 34 points as Merrimack (1-2) picked up its first victory of the season.

Allison Latham added 10 points for the winners and had a strong game on the boards, along with Madison Freed.

Sophomore guard Veronica Moceri led the Broncos with 25 points. Sophomore guard Sandi Purcell added 11 for Alvirne, which fell to 0-3.

BOYS HOCKEY

Dec. 14: Merrimack 9, Timberlane 5

Connor Powell and Dom Valuzzi recorded three goals and four assists each to lead the Tomahawks to a season-opening home win at West Side Arena in Manchester on Wednesday.

David Downie chipped in with two goals and one assist, while freshman Jason Fortin notched his first varsity goal in the win.

Rutger Tupper was strong defensively in front of goalies Brett Glendye and Devin Gillis, who split time in net for the Tomahawks (1-0).

WRESTLING

Dec. 17: Merrimack seventh at Milford/Souhegan Classic

Nashua North recorded a team score of 186 to finish second, behind Coventry (R.I.) which was first with 205, at the 20th Milford/Souhegan Classic Wrestling Tournament. Milford (173) came in third while Merrimack (79) placed seventh and Souhegan (39) was ninth.

North’s Marcel Laplante finished first at 113-pounds, beating Timberlane’s Jake Kappler in the final, and teammate Connor McBride defeated Milford’s Joe Pelliterri in the final to win at 145. Zack Lavoie held off Elias Carter of Colchester (N.Y.) in the final at 220, winning 12-10.

Joe Albina of Milford finished first at 170, and Andrew Myers won at 182, beating North’s Chris Anderson in the final.

North also got points from Joey Page, who took second at 152, losing 4-2 to Chris Lash of Colchester, and Evan Manns, who finished second at 195, falling to Colchester’s Chris Wicks. Cameron Bennet also took third at 106.

Milford’s Andrew Bellatoni placed second at 285, falling to Colchester’s Eric Decker, while Devin Dolliver lost to Coventry’s Styker Bluw to finish second at 132

Merrimack’s Brandon Dine came in second at 126, falling to Derek Bohle of Timberlane, and Kyle Heidbreder took third at 160.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Dec. 20: Merrimack 63, Manchester West 49

Dmitri Floras and Tyler Gendron had 15 points apiece while Gendraon added 15 rebounds as the Tomahawks are off to a 2-0 Division I start. Eric Gendron added 14 points for Merrimack, which jumped out to a 13-6 first quarter lead and stayed in front the rest of the way.

GIRLS TRACK

Dec. 18: BG wins opening meet

The Bishop Guertin girls scored 76 points to run away with the first indoor track meet of the season in the afternoon session Sunday at the University New Hampshire. Merrimack came in second with 38 points.

Betsy Garnick won the long jump for Bishop Guertin with a leap of 16-13⁄4, and also came in first in the 55-meter hurdles (8.7) and the 55 (7.4).Shauna Salem won the 3,000 in a time of 11:18.1 and teammate Sarah Murphy was second in 11:21.4.

Molly McCabe took first in the 1,000 (2:57.7) while Sarah Burke finished second in the event (2:58.1). McCabe also came in first in the 300 (43.4) and Burke was fourth in the 300 (45.5).

Tiffany Ann Stanton was first in the 600 (1:47.4) while Melissa LaCoste took second in the high jump (5-0) and the long jump (14-31⁄4).

Jacklyn Dubois was second in the shot put (32-11), while Meghan Donohoe was fifth in the 1,000 (3:25.7), Merisa Dion came in fifth in the long jump (13-91⁄2) and Shannon Veilleux took fifth in the 600 (1:50).

Merrimack’s Emily Pollard took second in the 55 (7.5) and teammate Julia Perry was third (7.6). Pollard also finished second in the 300 (43.9) and Perry came in third in the same event (44.0).

Alexandra Pickett placed second in the 1,500 (5:32.6) and Lauren Perry came in fourth in the 600 (1:48.9).

Merrimack also won the 4x400 relay in a time of 4:32.

BOYS TRACK

Dec. 18: Tomahawks finish first

Merrimack won Sunday’s afternoon session at UNH by recording 51 points. Bishop Guertin finished in a tie with Windham and Manchester Central to come in fourth with 24 points.

The Tomahawks got a first-place finish from Devin Martin in the long jump (21-11⁄4) and from Alex Doyle in the 55 hurdles (8.2).

Martin also took second in the 55 (6.6) while Chaz Myers won the 300 (37.9) and was fourth in the 55 (6.7).

John Conlin came in second in the 1,500 (4:16.2). Alex Krysiak came in fourth in the high jump (5-4) and fifth in the long jump (18-51⁄2).

Chris Busby placed fourth in the 3,000 (9:23.8) and Kyle Haggerty came in fifth in the 1,000 (2:47.3). Sam Prive finished sixth in the shot put (37-73⁄4) while Ben Francis was also sixth in the 600 (1:33.7)

Merrimack also came in third in the 4x400 relay.

Bishop Guertin’s Chris Cogliano came in first in the 1,000 (2:38.6) and teammate Griffin Gagnon took second in the same event (2:38.8).

Brandon Latham placed third in the 1,500 (4:17.2) while Matt Chapman was fifth (4:31.2) and Robert DeSisto was sixth (4:31.6).

Brody Smith took fourth in the long jump (18-91⁄2) and Daniel Sypek came in fourth in the 55 hurdles (8.9).
