Bedford police grow beards to raise funds for Special Olympics

BEDFORD – Chief John Bryfonski is pleased to announce that members of the Bedford Police Department will be growing out their facial hair this month to raise money for the Bedford Bobcats Special Olympics team.

Officers who wish to participate will donate $25 to grow out their beards. The Bedford Police Union has agreed to match the total donation, or bring the total amount to at least $500.

The Bedford Bobcats is a year-round program that works with kids from fifth grade to young adulthood to participate in bowling, basketball, skiing, track and field and golf. Organizers also coordinate social activities to help families stay connected.

Police started raising money for the Bobcats last year. Officers donated $200 and hope to increase their contribution every year.

"This fundraiser allows our officers to have fun while raising money for a great cause," Bryfonski said. "And with this extremely cold winter weather we’re currently experiencing, there’s no better time to have a little extra warmth on their faces."
