Derryfield team qualifies for FIRST Lego League championship

MANCHESTER – Sixth and seventh graders from The Derryfield School recently competed in the FIRST Lego League New Hampshire State Championship held at Nashua High School South. Derryfield’s two teams, The Defenders (grade 7) and Cougars (grade 6) matched up against forty-eight other teams. Olivia Kim and Cameron Wilding of Bedford were part of the Cougars team, while Rylan Morgan, also of Bedford, was a member of the Defenders.

Competing against the best of the best, the seventh grade Defenders wowed the judges and received perfect scores for their project presentation. The sixth grade Cougars won one of only three Judges Awards, which was awarded to them in recognition of their tenacious, can-do spirit.

Each year FIRST Lego League releases a challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic, and this year’s was trash. The challenge is comprised of four parts: the robot game, the robot design, the project, and the core values.

Teams can have up to 10 members and the Derryfield School, with 11 members, decided to break into two groups, separated by grade.

Dr. Marco Masoni worked with both teams and was fortunate to have two parent volunteers, Deb Morgan and Maria Rooney, whose sons Rylan and Sam were on the seventh grade team.

Teams participate in the challenge by programming a robot to score points on a themed playing field (robot game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified (project), all guided by the FIRST Lego League core values. If they place, teams are then invited to compete in an official State tournament. http://www.firstlegoleague.org/
