Kiwanis Club honors Manchester student

MANCHESER – The Kiwanis Club of Manchester honored Desmond Powell, senior at West High School and member of the school’s Key Club, with the Robert P. Connelly Medal of Heroism award from Kiwanis International as well as provided him a $500 scholarship on April 18.

As he was walking home from a Monarchs game, Desmond spotted a man sitting on the railing of the Granite Street Bridge contemplating suicide. Without regard for his own safety, Desmond engaged the man in conversation. He learned that he was a heroin user and depressed over his condition. With the help of a passerby, Desmond convinced the distraught man to come off the bridge’s railing. He treated him to a sandwich and coffee at the Dunkin’ Donuts nearby and contacted the police.

Desmond was cited by the Mayor and School Board for his "courage and caring."

The West High senior is described as "a leader" and having a "strong moral compass" by Christopher Motika, the school’s Principal.
