Wilton dam cited for needed repair

WILTON – The New Reservoir Dam is in need of about $15,000 in repairs, but there is no money in the budget.

Water Commissioner Bob Duquette told selectmen June 18 that the commissioners had received notice from the state’s Dam Bureau that they weren’t in compliance with state regulations and a reply is needed by Oct. 1.

“We have to have an engineering study in place, and we have to clean up around the dam,” Duquette said.

The commissioners have consulted with an engineering firm and gotten estimates.

The main problem with the dam, Duquette said, “is seepage at the bottom of the dam.”

No money can be appropriated for the project until the next Town Meeting in March. In the meantime, the selectmen will write to the state and see if a meeting can be set up between the bureau, the selectmen and the water commissioners to discuss the problem.

The dam, located on Sand Hill Road, was built in 1937 and is owned by the town.

Duquette does not think the condition of the dam constitutes a safety issue at this time.
